This morning, at the only traffic light on my way to work, I am sitting right behind a cruiser from the next town over. Not in his jurisdiction . Light turns green, and he hauls ass down the road. I tailed him . 83 in a 50 mph zone. No lights on , no sirens, no emergency . I stayed back quite a few car lengths , but this went for about 5- 6 miles . He was rolling along averaging roughly 80 mph.
I speed too, so I guess I should not get too bent, but sheesh. Double standard much. That would be a pretty fat ticket if I got snagged for it
I sort of wanted to take the car # and report it, but we all know it won't really do any good .

Even better, I was at a red light next to a NYPD Explorer, in the cross traffic, lead car stops to make a left and the two cars behind him have a low speed, chain reaction collision.

I see the Explorer’s light go on and think, oh great, he’s going to block the whole intersection. Nope, lights on, he made a right from the left lane and left.

The ones that would really piss me off were the motor cops speeding on their way up the freeway in the mornings during commute time. Traffic could be moving at 60-65 and they'd think nothing of doing 80+. Just because they could.

I followed a Sacramento County Sheriff one morning as he blew through every single stop sign for about 3 miles on the way back to the station. No lights or siren - just quittin' time.

There is a recent case here in GA where a PO PO broadsided a car with 2 young girls in it. They were turning left in front of him - he was going 90+MPH with no lights/sirens running. Killed one of the girls. He was first found guilty, then case got overturned on a technicality. Not sure if it will be retried.

A few years ago something similar almost happened to me: I was front-of-the-line at a green light but forgot to put it in gear; before I could get moving, a Sacramento County Sheriff came hauling ass through the intersection through the red light - no lights or sirens. I was in my Karmann Ghia, so he would have punted me into the middle of next week, and I'm sure the "internal affairs" investigation would have found me at fault.

Typically I don’t mind, but I have been passed on my bicycle by a state trooper going over 100 which seemed pretty reckless.

You ever been on the freeway when they go the speed limit? Messes the heck out of traffic. I think they should always go a bit faster- not excessive mind you.

The other side of the “coin” is that if they aren’t going faster, they can’t check out as many drivers for infractions as the scenery doesn’t change.

Similar case here in NJ. Trooper ran a stop sign with no lights and sirens and killed 2 sisters. Jury found him not guilty.

For me it depends upon the situation.

If I observed a peace officer speeding in a residential area, I would report them myself.
On the highway, I expect them not to hold up or disrupt traffic.

Years ago, passing through Quebec in the days of a two lane highway with overtaking lanes on long hills, we caught up to a line of cars which had a Quebec Provincial Police cruiser at the front. He was driving at the exact limit. After several miles with more and more cars joining this mobile roadblock, the police car caught up to a semi truck and, at the next hill, stayed tucked in behind the truck as it remained in the right lane.
Immediately every car which had been bottled up behind the QPP went by in an unbroken line and we never saw the police car again.

Conversely, one day when I found myself leaving the house late for work, I was not happy to see a RCMP cruiser pull onto the highway behind me, thinking I would not be able to make time. I was much happier when he overtook me and proceeded up the highway at a pace I was very pleased to copy. I made it to work with minutes to spare!

State Troopers like to tailgate cars here on the Mass Pike, 3 feet off the rear bumper. They'll come up behind you fast and hang there. Maybe to push you to speed or just to intimidate you to get out of the way as Dunkin Donuts is closing soon.

I've called the barracks a few times with the trooper's plate number to complain.

20 or so years ago in Hickory NC a local cop was running more than 70mph in a 35mph zone. No lights, no siren.


He t-boned a 17 y/o girl killing her instantly. They refused to find that he did anything wrong and walked without even a hearing.

not too long after that I witnessed an accident between a city cop and a civilian.

the cop was working an accident. traffic was snarled badly. the officer decided to move her car. in the process she plowed right into a car that wasn't moving. She jumped out of the car and immediately starting yelling at and blaming the other driver saying he failed yield an emergency vehicle.

the guy wasn't moving, he couldn't move due to traffic. she started to write him a ticket. that's when I got out the car and told the guy I witnessed the entire thing and gave him my info. she of course demanded a copy of the info....


she backed away from citing him but just about everyday for months I would see her in my mirror and occasionally I would see drive real slow past my apartment.

So much so that I chased down an Ohio Highway Patrolman and called him in for speeding. His commanding officer didn't like it when he asked if I'd like to press charges against him and my reply was "let him know I'm letting him off with a warning"

A friend if mine was a street patrol, now a detective.

When he was street patrol he hardly ever wrote a speeding ticket. His reasoning was he would be a hypocrite if he did.

He is a car guy always fixing up cars and has a nice supercharged S2000.

He said the only way he would write someone for speeding is if that driver was driving like a moron, weaving and being reckless, if they were simply going too fast he would always just warn them.



Back in the 90's I knew a guy from the RX7 world that lived outside Baton rouge AL. He claimed there was a local cop with a suped up patrol car. If he caught you street racing you had 2 options, take the ticket or race him for double or nothing.

That forum guy had a 450hp RX7 way back then, he didn't get a ticket that night.

Police (and politicians, and "Security"/ Secret Service) need to be held to every single law that is imposed on the citizens.

They should not only be charged for violating the traffic regulations that they are supposed to enforce, they should be fired for those violations.

If a state restricts gun features, magazine capacity, hollow point bullets, those same restrictions need to be on the Police.

Rules regarding concealed carry reciprocity, handgun free zones? Same for police as the rest of the population.

The laws that give these particular individuals more rights on the basis of their employment are blatantly unconstitutional.

Here in the real world that we live in we can't even stop the open bribery of our lawmakers. Good luck getting the Constitution and laws enforced evenly.

I don't really car is a cop speeds or turns on the lights so they can run a light. However, I can't stand it when they (or anyone else) doesn't use their turn signals. To me, that is inconsiderate and shows that someone is a crappy driver.
