Are mothballs toxic in the soil around tomatos?

Don't ask me why I ask

if you have slug issues, Epsom salt works and is harmless for the tomatos

Also, mothballs are not what they used to be.

Harmless? I suspect that depending upon the quantity and area of application, that might not be the case.

well that would be true for anything. As a slug preventer goes, applied properly, it will not harm the tomatoes but does keep the slugs out.

Well...do you suppose they will deter moles/voles sitting visible at the surface ...

Don't ask ....

deer is a pretty tough one to beat, pretty much takes a fence to fix that.

Beer works great for slugs. The suckers drown happy.

I like a healthy separation between my food and moth balls which are a form of pesticide. For moles/voles/gophers we used a raised garden bed with wire mesh underneath. The mesh kept them out and then we only had to deal with tomato worms.

I’d rather ask whether the tomatoes were toxic.

Speaking of deer (the gudamped mangy, disease-ridden vermin that they are) if I had Chuck Norris’ reflexes I coulda stomped on a fawn’s head today when it popped out of a bush when I reached down to break off a very low branch in my yard.

Instead I almost shat myself.
