It was a longish slow roller here in Tustin.

My Uncle up in Portland recorded it on his seismograph at home.

You miss the point, IMO.

There isn't any "panic", just serious and justified concern. Simply because this event was in a relatively remote, sparsely populated region should not make us blase about earthquakes. 7.1 is huge. Period. The Sylmar quake of 1971 was a 6.5. The Northridge quake of 1994 was a 6.7. Those two quakes killed scores of people and caused billions of dollars in damages. Just like real estate, it's location, location, location.

No, it's not panic. It's a reminder of the inevitable and a call for preparedness.

Exactly!!!

We are a mile from the San Andreas and feel small quakes everyday.

A 7.1 centered in Palm Desert and there will be mass panic from the majority not prepared.

Redondo Beach will be floating towards Catalina!

Afterwards it will be known as Torrance Beach.

Torrance owns 1 mile of beach between Redondo and Palos Verdes.

There is already a Torrance beach.

If a number of days without a quake would pass, is that cause for concern? Do days ever pass without tremors?

There are quakes constantly this close to the fault but the majority are small enough to not actually feel. They register 1.0 or less.
I’m not sure which theory to believe anymore!
1..... a lot of small quakes keep a big one from happening.

2......a lot of small ones are leading up to a big one.

I’ve been here through the “big” ones like Sylmar and Northridge and those were big but will be considered medium if the San Andreas ever really lets loose.

The really scary fact is that the main fault is the San Andreas, and right under LA it becomes a subduction fault, while the rest is a fast moving strike slip fault. When the North American plate shatters due to the subduction around LA, it is going to be like Hell was unleashed on Earth.

This 7.1 or whatever is only a small part of the NA plate fracturing out from the LA subduction zone and releasing a small percentage of the energy that has been built up. It's probably not a bad idea to start to think about disaster preparedness.
