Oil shelf life?
As spring is approaching this weekend I changed the oil in my 911, while searching for a Mahle oil filter on the shelf I moved some boxes and found an unopened case of Brad Penn oil.
I bought my car back in 2010 and I vaguely remember buying a few cases of BP in probably 2011 or 12 Being that this oil is pushing 10yrs old would you guys recommend using it on my next oil change or just take it to the recycler?

Call the folks at Brad Penn, they will likely tell you it is fine. But that is a just a guess.

I'd use it. I don't think 10 years is much to worry about with oil.
Now, if it was in a stained paper oil can and 50 years old, I'd have second thoughts for a variety of reasons.

I believe it does have a shelf life. Additives can degrade or wax over extended periods. I agree with Glen...give them a call.

Brand new, unopened bottles, I'll be interested in what they say. I'll bet it's good to go since it hasn't been exposed to the air.

It's really your call. Highly doubt BP will make any recommendation other than not exceeding the maximum shelf life (5 years ?)
Stored in an unheated garage, I would throw it out or use it in the beatup truck. Last edited by pmax; 02-17-2020 at 01:42 PM.. |

or use it as bar oil for a chain saw. What's the cost of the oil vs the cost of engine damage?

This subject recently came up on an aviation forum I frequent.
Bottom line: Unless the label is written in ancient Egyptian hierographics, it's okay. |

If you use it, be sure to agitate it first. I’ve noticed that the additives tend to settle in the Penzoil Platinum I use in everything but the air cooleds.

"If in doubt throw it out." Oil is the cheapest part for your car.
Just sayin...

5 years - if stored in water tight containers--pretty much the consensus I always heard.

My Sinclair sign says "Mellowed 100,000,000 years", but that might be pushing the envelope a bit.

And no, I don't think there is a shelf life on sealed containers of motor oil. When in doubt, send a sample to Blackstone to see how the additive package is holding up. Bill K

Open a bottle and see how it smells, flows, etc. If it looks fine, I'd use it.
There is a limit however.. As this guy finds out with a 70 year old can of oil.. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-zHlxeu_yuM |
