Aging and plastic surgery

I recently saw a commercial with a daytime show host I know of, but frankly haven't followed closely (or at all) recently. She looked awful--she had obviously had cosmetic surgery done, and it was terrible. It seems that more and more of the celeb-type women I remember dimly from 30 years ago are popping up with that done to their faces, and it's always pretty obvious. While I guess it's possible that it usually goes well, and we only notice the outliers, there sure seem to be a lot of outliers.

This all made me wonder about why so many women (and I guess men) seem compelled to do this.

If she looks 30 but has hands of a 70 year old, she’s probably in her 80’s.

I don't really get why they do it. Is it for themselves? For men? For other women?

Some people are afraid of getting old and dying, combined w the fact that people who work in front of a camera have a short shelf life and want to maybe extend their career, etc..

The really good cosmetic surgery is the kind you can't really notice or put your finger on. But no one talks about that kind, which is kind of the point.

I see nothing wrong with mantaining a good appearance........not necessarily young. Men or women. I think 2 key items come to mind: 1st and foremost find a surgeon who is an artist and honest with the end result. 2 There's only so much that can be done W/O looking like the above pic.

My wife is in the oral surgery field and the practice she works for also does cosmetic surgery - but only in the restorative sense with work they do.

In the DC / MD / Northern Va area there are literally hundreds of plastic docs. Only a small % are artists in their area of specialty. Takes a lot of digging to find them.

Yes, it is. It's kind of like a badge they wear that says they are unhappy. I admire women like Jamie Lee Curtis, who has decided just to age naturally. She is still gorgeous to me. Looks are fleeting; beauty is enduring.

Society and social media can be very cruel to aging actors and actresses , add to that their own ego's and vanity = the need to keep their youth . I have no problem with any man or woman getting a slight nip here or a tuck there , but when you start looking like the Geico gecko you should probably step away from the knife

My wife loves the TV show "Botched" which is about two plastic surgeons that fix other surgeons bad jobs. Some of the people they turn down are just into looking a certain way, and they love the botox look. Some are people with disfigurement from cancer or accidents. They have some cases of really bad plastic surgery from other doctors.

Made me laugh: I played in an Over The Line Tournament in Virginia Beach in 1989. The name of the team was "We may not go down in history but we'll go down on your little sister".

I still have a split finger nail on my left middle finger from taking a ball on the tip of said finger.

Interesting perspectives. I won't do a thing as I age and fall, if I am blessed, into the certainty of old age with visual bellwethers signifying the decline. Nothing.

But I don't make a living being attractive (thank god...I'd starve) but it makes sense to me that those that do have the compulsion to remain youthful looking.

My preferences in feminine beauty run counter to plastic surgery and are in line with Corgi's: Looks are fleeting; beauty is enduring.

That said, so what? Have at it if it makes you happy.

ok, well - a major gf I used to have went to Bev. Hills HS with JL Curtis, and swore that she was 'enhanced'

OTOH, she'd have been a lot younger then and may have rethought things with age

In general, there is a gradient from wearing lipstick or some powder, to tats/nose rings/plucked eyebrows, to cosmetic surgery...

Where to draw the line? Obviously, some women are obsessed with their appearance. I'd fer sure draw it there, if not elsewhere.

Then there is the whole issue of does she want to look like she did 10 years ago, or does she want to look like a whole different person.

Earlier in the episode some chick asks Hank how he likes her down under. He says is looks fine she explains she had vaginoplasty... he was perplexed as to why a woman would do that.

All of this mutilation, I call it turning into an LA cat, seems to start with LA and spread across the US as impressionable woman copy the Hollywood Stars.

Sad indeed.
