Questions about the big white X's seen on closed runways...
In the broadest sense, the X means closed/don't even THINK about landing here. Does the X mean permanent close, or just closed for now? For emergencies, would it be okay to land on one anyway? (assuming it was in good condition otherwise)? I know some close runways are repurposed for drag strips, auto-x, etc. so you'd take a chance trying to land there, especially when there may be some vehicles, go-karts, motorcycles, etc. using the space, not expecting a airplane to land Are there other styles of symbols marked on the runway (other that the heading digits)? What might these other 'non-X' symbols mean to a pilot / is there is list of them? |
White X is not usable landing strip/runway.
permanent or temporary.. It is meant to make it absolutely clear that there is no active landing strip/runway, may not even have services to refuel or repair.. its not a runway at that point.. but it looks like one.. hence the X If its really an emergency one lands the plane where gravity brings it. there's nobody who will fine you for putting it down in a non airfield place if you have no other options. Military Airfield Golf terrain high way drag strip closed airfield Whatever it takes. Landing takes priority, sort out the situation of the landing site later once everybody is safe on the ground.. here is another one for Seahawk, make his ticky ticker go boom-didi-boom (Allo Allo pun) :P http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1674588979.jpg |
Captain Williams, flying a F9F Panther, downed four Soviet (Russian piloted) MiG 15s in the longest dogfight in US aviation history.

Active lift would make tractor-trailers much lighter or fuel efficient on downgrades and slow braking. Somehow the concept has never been discussed . |
