Interesting concepts, but there are more economical ways of moving things.
And finding a runway..

Airbus Is Testing Planes With Flapping Wings to Help Reduce Carbon Emissions
https://robbreport.com/motors/aviation/airbus-testing-flapping-wings-efficiency-1235460915/
Quote:

Headed up by industry veteran Sue Partridge, the Wing of Tomorrow program has determined that future wings need to be 25 percent longer than at present. The wingspan of the A320 family of narrow-body, short-haul jets, for instance, will increase from 118 to 148 feet (feet (36 to 45 meters). The wings will also be made of composite materials that are lighter than the aluminum alloy Airbus has used for the past 40 years.....

In addition, Airbus will test out some new “flapping wings” in Bordeaux, France. Christened the eXtra Performance Wing, the design is rooted in biomimicry (biologically inspired engineering) and changes shape and form during flight to maximize its aerodynamic efficiency. How? Gust sensors on the front of the aircraft register any changes in turbulence and then the system automatically makes relevant adjustments to the control surfaces of the wing to improve airflow.

..........“The eXtra Performance Wing technologies, which change the shape of the wing by mimicking a bird's feathers, will adjust automatically to maximise aerodynamic flow.”

There are also the hinged wingtips, which have a dual purpose. On the ground they prevent the aircraft from exceeding the maximum wingspan length that can be accommodated at airport gates (36 metres), and in the air they are flexible, able to change shape to avoid putting too much pressure on the wing. The wingtips also allow for a longer span to be achieved, increasing lift and reducing drag.

Signed the papers and hauled her inside today.

Ercoupes are such cool little airplanes.

The president of our local EAA chapter has the nicest I've ever seen.
Full IFR with autopilot. Not a scratch or even fingerprint on the perfect paint.
Can't fathom how much has been spent, but he loves his airplane.

His wife has her own C-182.
Great people.

Hey, varmint-
Is your bi-fold door tracking right?
Picture makes it look like it's a bit wonky.
...or quite a bit wonky

varmint 01-11-2024 03:40 PM

iPhone distortion. Door is fine.

Bit of a fixer upper. No radio. Instruments are all 46 vintage. Flys nice. Engine is in surprisingly good shape. For my skill level this is ideal. Gonna be a summer fair weather Sunday afternoon pilot.

Cool! Looks like the Heeler approves👍

I had a little struggle with climb rate in mine and it was a 90hp M-10 version...maybe 300-400fpm with a passenger. Fun plane to fly with the canopy back though! Enjoy

varmint 01-13-2024 11:00 AM

You had one? I will have many questions later.

Froze my ass off on the test flight. She’s just going to sit till summer. Have a few fixes planned. Needs a proper radio. Some corrosion . Crack in one window.

Otherwise incredibly fun. Having the top down reminds me of the t-top firebird I had in high school.

varmint 01-13-2024 11:11 AM

This one has the 85hp continental. 85hp when new. Good thing I’m not in a hurry to get anywhere and have a long runway.

It’s also rated for pump gas. Lot of not alsways consistent info online how I should play that.

I have flown a Ercoupe a friend of mine owned, many times. They are fine aircraft with a great history.

I am very happy for you.

Enjoy.

Mine was one of the Mooney M-10 variants (all metal) and I owned it for a few years in the early 90s. I flew it around So Cal then with my girlfriend (now wife)...nighttime over LA with the canopy open was a lot of fun. I remember the King 170 nav com radio was pretty lame.

Nice ! a rewarding project!
Come with FF stuff?

billybek 01-19-2024 03:38 AM

Had to see what it was! Sounds like a cool aircraft.
