That is Awesome!!!! Years ago while I was on a crew of a biplane race team, I was wondering the pits when I saw Bob Hoover and Clay Lacey sitting under the awning of a big diesel pusher motorhome. I walked up and respectfully asked if Mr Hoover and Mr Lacey if they would sign my Reno Air Race poster.
Not only did they say yes, but he (Bob Hoover) invited me into the motorhome for iced tea. So there I was….. drinking ice tea and having a casual aviation related talk with two aviation icons.

For the first time in my life, I was cool for 15 minutes.

Working the fires

I can only imagine those are ex military pilots who need their adrenaline fix and in since there is nobody shooting at ya in the civvy world , that kind of flying is the next best thing

Time is money, and everybody needs their crops dusted at prezactly the same time.
You miss out when a farmer calls you and his crops are not done right, he'll never call you again.
Around here a VET comes late for a calf birth , they they never call that vet again.. Farmers are very demanding like that.

Gotta love the Cubs! I flew one with my pops long ago, and now the new Carbon Cub is off the charts!

Thanks, it was truly a shinning moment in my humble existence. Left there thinking to myself, “did that really just happen?” I mean, I know it happens to other folks, just not me…

These are old pics of my Reno Pit Crew Days. Plane is still running up there I believe. New owner and different name. In the last pic, the trike my son and I built together in his high school welding class. He is now 35, married and has two kiddos. Damn that make me feel old…….
Plan on running up to Reno this weekend, first time in years.

VariEze FastMover 23RR UPDATE:

Doing some work on 23RR getting her ready for a CI. When the previous owner updated the panel, he used a boatload of 6-32 screws, flat washers and lock nuts for everything.
Since I am the type that can “NOT” leave anything alone, and need to “Bugstriderize-it” . I have got to get to work.
It was my intent to use rivnuts on the panel but I discovered I can not find an extended shank 6-32 aluminum rivnut that would work on composite material that is .368” thick. So here is my “outside the box” thinking. This is where the forum will experience our local A&Ps shred me for doing this…enjoy and “your welcome”
Since I decided to use the plated steel 6-32 rivnut, it was just a little longer than the material I was going through. I found that the aluminum ones would actually distort with a little pressure if I squeezed them with my thumb and forefinger because they were so small. So to take up the extra length and to help the marine two part epoxy hold. This epoxy that was designed for composite and fiberglass bond to dissimilar materials like metal, I used a circular lock washer with the locking tabs on the inside. The tangs were tight enough that I have to use my thumbs to push them onto the shaft of the rivnut, making them very snug. This would also allow the epoxy to grip the washer and striations on the rivnut itself. When I pushed the rivnut in from the rear of the panel, I used a Delron(spelling) spacer, recessed aviation washer and a long 6-32 screw to hold it in place and secure from the front. This will allow me to secure the panel without having to reach into the small space with my fists of ham and hold a wee lock nut from the back. If the canard was in place, this would not even be possible.

The Aircam jumps off the runway in an insanely short distance. They truly look awesome to fly. I think some of the “Planet Earth” was shot with this platform. Although not 100% sure on this”

The Aircam was designed for a National Geographic special, filming over dense jungles in Africa.
Design requirements- excellent visibility for the camera, ability to fly slowly, with twin engine reliability. If the airplane went down through the jungle's thick canopy, it would most likely never be found.

Turned out to be such an excellent design, that this "one off" airplane was put into production as a kit.

Flying the Feathered Edge is a good movie about Mr Hoover.

Bill Dana was a B29 pilot back in the old XS1/X2 days and said he would drop Chuck and after he was gone Bob Hoover would do a zoom climb in the P80 chase plane right in front of his windshield and scare the crap out of him.

Gorgeous ships for sure, but no where near as durable as an original -18.

Ooooooohhhhhhh, It’s been years since that pic was taken. Name sounds very familiar. I will look through my pics. I do better with faces.

I am going to shoot from the hip and say that I do. It’s just been years since I was in the crowd but I did know most the folks in both groups. (the fun bunch, biplane & Formula) It was always funny to see the personalities of each race class. Especially when they had their closed door meeting at one of the local casinos. Biplane meeting would happen and end and everything would be right in the world… Then while walking out you could hear yelling going on in another meeting (T-6 class). At that time, that class was an angry group. lol

Here is a humorous Class breakdown from my crew days. This is made in jest and having fun. That is all…..

Formula & BiPlane- fun loving beer drinking group

Sport Class-Mostly Tec folks

T-6 Class - Looked down on F-1, Biplane and Sport. Had more money than most but not enough to play in the Unlimited crowd. Much internal infighting and angry an group.

Unlimited n Jet - The rich uncle bunch. Good natured and fiercely competitive amongst themselves.

In all, we would be up there for the entire week, met a lot of great people, had fun, laughed a lot. Unfortunately, as with many high speed dangerous sport, we lost friends along the way. RIP to all the aviators that flew skyward for the final flight.

Cheers

Bobby is/was short balding blue eyed white guy from tranquility... here's the deal though you wouldn't probably make a connection to that description as easily as you would that he called himself the one armed bandit.... because he only had the one arm.
