I think the points made have all been pretty reasonable. Other than the difference in time and convenience for “fill ups,” I’m not sure that running out of electricity is much different than running out of gas. I don’t see lots of kids with cars run out of gas so I’m not sure that depleting a charge would routinely be a huge concern.

I'd buy her a Prius and be done with it. I would be worried about the arctic temps you encounter. I would be a fan of the EV if you were in a moderate climate. I have many friends and coworkers with Priusses and they are very reliable. To the point that I almost bought one myself.

I would buy a civic for the 250,000 of seemless potential miles it can go, and can be pulled into ANY gas station, at any hour of the day to refuel...how do you retrieve an EV that has no charge in the school parking lot, I don't believe they can be charged remotely (unlike a gas can).
Extreme cold weather severely effects usable range also, so during the worst January storm, she will have that constant concern about charge %, and distance/speed. |

I drove a Panamera Sport Turismo Hybrid yesterday as part of Porsche's customer events. Could go 40 Km on battery and recharged itself in several ways. Overall very nice car but expensive.
In talking with the techs I don't think I would ever go to a pure EV unless it's my third car and only ever to be used in the city. The hybrid was really neat (but I'm a techie), and if I wanted to "help" the environment I would consider one.

I have a recent 16yo driver, so I am speaking from experience here. I would not want her worrying about running out of electricity somewhere, not to mention in the freezing cold winter temps.
It seems as though you are making this more complicated that it needs to be. |

I'm not sure if this works on all EVs, but works on Teslas. Put it in drive, tow it around with something else, *slowly* add miles via regen.

Until electrics have a 15 minute charge time, They aren't viable. We love our 2015 Volt.

Get something safe and slow and dependable and gas. Expect it to dinged up within a year and towed for tickets. The next vehicle will be better suited to whatever her grand vision might be. |

I don't see the benefit in introducing a risk (run out of charge) to a teen driver.
ALSO electric is more dangerous to foot traffic and a new driver will not be as good at anticipating pedestrian movements.
