Active shooter training
Had to pick up a roll of carpet from Lowes this morning . Bought and paid for last nite, all I had to do was roll in first thing, and put it in my truck . Or, so I thought . 45 minutes later ....
There was no one in the carpet department who knew where my roll of carpet was, and no one who could cut me a new piece . Half the store was participating in " active shooter training". I guess it is the world we live in . I have to be honest, I think about it in nearly every place I go now. I sort of have a plan as to what I would do, where I would run, where to hide , what I would do if the kids were with me etc... Kind of sucks when you really think about how much this affects our daily lives Do you have any sort of plan in place ? What are you gonna do when you have a grocery cart full of your weekly take, and you hear the distinct pop pop pop. ? |
Is there such thing as a passive shooter?
Just wondering. |

Taught the world could end at any moment if the Russians sent the missiles flying. Fred, in response to your question, it is something I think about in crowded places. I do look at my escape routes, cover, concealment. I also avoid giant concerts and the like even if I like the music. No cover, no concealment, no realistic exit. It do not see it as a negative, it is little different than flying an airplane and watching out as you fly for potential emergency landing patches on the terrain around you. Or little different from checking the oil in your car, or the tire pressure of your tires. |
A good friend of mine has a consulting business that does this for businesses, schools, theatres, etc. sets up an emergency action plan and performs training for the employees. He has been at it for 10 years.

Least of my worries.

I was looking for exit signs, cops and potential bad guys everywhere I went, long before mass shootings became a thing. I think the best way to avoid these incidents is to avoid crowded places and never stare at your phone in public. Pay attention to your surroundings. Those are things I do every second I'm outside my house, and I just naturally hate crowds anyway.

I don't think about it at all.
That's how I roll, I guess..... |
I look at things a bit more realistically. I'm more likely to be hurt or killed in a car accident travelling to a place like Lowes or Walmart than I am when I'm actually in the store. I spend more time watching my mirrors and oncoming traffic than I do worrying about someone carrying out a shooting at my destination. I guess I just play the odds. I'm probably more like Rick in that I've never enjoyed being in crowded places. Not because I'm afraid of what someone might do, but rather it's just too noisy and I don't enjoy it.

I went to see a buddy's band play at an outdoor mall last night. During a break Mrs. Lee and I walked around a bit. In the several hundred people we walked past, I don't think a single one of them was not staring at their phone, unless their hands were occupied by a cup of ice cream. It was a pretty sad state of affairs, and it was the kind of environment an evildoer would relish. I could have done anything I wanted to any of them and no one else would have noticed who had done what until it was over. They were complete zombies, viewing the whole world through their phone screens. Even groups of 3-5 girls, sitting together, all staring at their own phones.

A couple days ago there was a cougar prowling around my hood.. (not the MILFy kind) I wasn't going back into that park unless I was armed with a high powered laser pointer. kitty kitty ;) People seem to like to wallow in fear. Everyone of us will face a situation that is insurmountable. Shooters, planes, apex predators... as Sooner or later sez; Least of my worries. |
My wife used to tease me that everywhere we went and sat down I had to have m back to the wall and a view of the entrance because of my training. Now she automatically saves that seat for me. I watch the videos and see the people running for their lives but I can't help but wonder how many are actually running towards the shooter? Sometimes cover and concealment are your best choice.

Just one is presented as a lot more scary than the other. To me, dead is dead. I to pay attention when driving. You could call it living in fear I suppose if driver safety is taught. |
Franka Potente is all one ever needs to know about "it".

For the air-raid drill, we were told to line up in the hallways, girls against the block wall, boys behind them to act as a shield. Couldn't do that today. |

Blah Blah Blah....heard all that sh$t before. How many mass shootings in Australia last week?? Everybody says they're going to do something and nobody fcuking does. "Yeh...FCUK YEH I'll shoot him" when???? after he's already killed a bunch of people or after he's already been shot by the cops?? I think it was Rick or Jeff that said a long time ago the dead are 'collateral damage' to our second amendment rights. |

I also worry about being struck by lightning and bitten by a shark, I think in both cases I may have a better chance of being a victim of. Quote:
I was just in a downtown setting Saturday night, I was watching live music, I took my phone out snapped 2 pictures and put it away, never looked at it again all night. I also try to get a feel for where I am at, there are times when I feel like I can relax, Saturday night was one, I was not on guard like I would be in NYC in the 80's. I was relaxed, buzzed and enjoying myself. We were in Chelsea NY last spring, a couple of streets I walked down even in Chelsea made me uneasy, I kept my eyes out and was paying attention to everyone. I was not relaxed and was not buzzed then. I was on my toes. I changed some of the routes were were taking to get into what I perceived was a safer route. Quote:
The restaurants and bars around the venue were at maybe 50% capacity, we could walk into any bar and half the seats were empty. You could walk up calmly and sit down. If there were lines everywhere and people 3 deep around the bars, I would have left. I had to drive 135 Miles each way this weekend, all on back 2 lane roads, I was more anxious about that than being in the city I was in or the crowds I was in. |
I don't think any of us are running around in total fear about being gunned down, or avoiding public places because of this , but I do think about it everywhere I go no .
Nothing new to me really, I've been working in sketchy city neighborhoods for 20 years now. I am used to looking over my shoulder and always having a plan . Just that , I am much more aware of my surroundings when out in a public place now , than I was before . I keep my eyes on people and watch what is going on around me . I like to know where the exits are, and good hiding places within the stores / I agree, much more likely to be injured in a car accident than involved in a shooting, but the frequency does seem to be increasing . . I really enjoy my time away from people, so I have always tried to get my shopping done later in the evening, or early in the am, before all the cluck heads are out . |

At the time of his arrest, the man, a suspected member of a motorcycle gang Edit; Look I'm sorry for the rant but there are families that are crying themselves to sleep tonight because they will never, ever, get to speak, hold, laugh with and love those people ever again. It's fcukin' horrible. These people can't just be 'collateral damage' because of a right. Somethings gotta give man...for fcuks sake. It just makes me angry..... |

I watch everything and everyone everywhere I go. Since 9/11 and living in nyc and becoming paranoid that every cab driver had a dirty bomb in the trunk I’ve been totally on guard. I still go out to most places though but I’m well aware of what a crap place this has become. My goal is to get as far away from civilization as possible. Nearest neighbor miles and miles away.
It must be very hard to be a parent these days. I grew up after the Adam Walsh murder and being abducted was or seemed like the primary parental worry back then. So much to worry about today |

Agreed. Spend your life worrying about something that may or may not happen? For what? Carry a concealed weapon and be proficient with it. Then live your life. |

Friend of mine was in shooting last year at a mall in California...made the active shooter news Cousins of mine was down the street from the los Vegas shooting. I took a dump in Borders Books in the World Trade Center many a morning. Lucky for me that day, I was elsewhere. An office within which I nearly accepted employment the week prior was across the street and destroyed Definitely don’t live in dread and fear but don’t think it can’t happen to you because it can |

And speaking of scary military jets... I have to ask the perpetually petrified pelicans here; How can we trust men and women to fly fully armed jets? Don't people know how much damage one of those can do? Hell, look how much damage was done with passenger jets on 9/11. How can we allow such deadly weapons to exist in the hands of mere mortals? Just about exactly a year ago a Seatac cargo worker stole a turbo prop plane and took it for a joy ride. ..well, until he decided he should kill himself. Anyway, the way some of you fearful are arguing, we should get rid of all instruments of potential death. --of course none of that will save you, just as attempts to get rid of guns won't save you. |

IDK things seem to me to be a real mess these days if your not careful Was in NYC last week. First time in a while since I move out in 2004. Greewiz what a mess. A dude of about 25 nearly pissed on my wife and me walking down 2nd Avenue. The general state of things there looked bleak. And everyone just walking along looking at their phone lost in their online world |
This thread makes me glad I live somewhere where the absolute last thought in my mind is I may get shot. Insane that anybody going about their normal, outside of a warzone, day has a necessity to eyeball potential threats and exit routes for when the bullets fly, that is a pathetic way to live.
