Speaking of Twin Cams: Porsche 547 twin cam on BaT

https://bringatrailer.com/listing/1955-porsche-4-cam-carerra/

It went to $220k, but didn't meet the reserve.

Very cool!
Excerpt (more info and lots more pics at the link)
Quote:
This Porsche Type 547/1 four-cam engine (P90513) originated in a pre-A 356 Carrera 1500 RS Speedster and was removed in the late 1960s. It was sold to the previous owner in San Diego, who reportedly intended to install it in his custom sand rail. Those plans never came to fruition, and the engine sat in storage until the seller’s acquisition in 1990. It has been part of his collection for the past three decades. Porsche vertical-shaft engine specialist Jacques Le Friant inspected the engine in 2017, at which point it was fired up on his stationary test stand. The cooling system, generator, twin Bosch distributors, and Italian-made Solex carburetors are included with the sale. This Fuhrmann four-cam engine is now being offered on a bill of sale in Del Mar, California.

Check out the pulley ratio, the fan is almost over-driven. Bet you can hear that thing at high rpm.

And its funny seeing such an expensive and exotic engine ... with crap bosch blue coils.
I bet I've thrown away a dozen of those things in my life.

cue the guy who's been running the same bosch blue coil for 120 years.

I've been running the same Bosch blue coil since I was a kid. I had it on my go-kart, then my mini bike. I ran it in a succession of big block MOPARS for fifteen years. It then went on my Sportster, where I still run it today. I installed quick disconnects on it so I could also use it on my two Beetles, then my 911. It still spilts time between the Sporty and my 911, my Land Cruiser, my Road King, and my Ducati.

NASA wanted to borrow it for the Space Shuttle, but I told them to get their own damn blue coil. This is my blue coil. There are many like it, but this one is mine. My blue coil is my best friend. It is my life. I must master it as I must master my life. My blue coil, without me, is useless. Without my blue coil, I am useless.

I was reading some of the comments about what it takes to service one of those engines. No thanks.

I had the opportunity many years ago to spend some quality time with a four cam down at my friend Gary Emory's shop. It was going into one of his son Rod's early restorations. What a marvelous little jewel.

One of our local R Gruppe chapter members has rebuilt several of these over the course of his long career in all makes of European car repair and restoration. I've quite thoroughly picked his brain about what all is involved. I can say, with all confidence, that it would be almost impossible to design a more complicated, less rebuild friendly motor. Unless one made a very contrived effort to do so. Granted, they did get simplified a bit in their last iterations, but the old built up Hirth crankshaft, built up camshafts, and other maybe unnecessary complication (like climbing gears at all cam drive locations), but they remain some of the most overly complicated motors ever made. And a thing of beauty.

The factory took 120 hours to assemble a twin cam motor. The 901 motor took 19.

Those are original blue coils, not like the later ones. They are rare and valuable and were not made in Brazil.

they need to be re-tuned every major weather change

dad had a 356 carrera street/racer with alloy doors and hood+ rear and the twin-cam
but sold it on quickly as it was not really a driver

bought under 3k sold for 4k who knew in the early 60's the future values

I believe that our own Grady Clay had quite an accumulation of them at one time. He was one of the rare guys who understood them and could service them properly.

At one time, Grady had both a 904 and an abarth spyder, both running 4 cams.
That was back before things went crazy in the early Porsches world.

What kind of carburetors are on that thing? It doesn’t look right without those tall Solexes.

somebody should stuff it in a 718 Cayman, drive up to Stuttgart and explain to them that that is the only way a flat 4 should be done and sound in a sports car

I had a quick look at "capricorngroup.net" but I couldn't find any price info.

Any idea what they're asking?

At Porsche Parade we took a tour of Larry Wilson's collection. He has 5 different cars with 4 cam engines in them.

A truly amazing collection. This is just part of the German wing.
