Heard the Matra at Long Beach 40 years ago. Made the Ferrari sound like a Briggs & Stratton.

Yea, some Ferraris sound great.

I will admit a very tiny slight prejudice, but I think my 911 with the singing cam chains behind me are the sweetest sounding engine. After a 12 hour day of driving, I was 100% ready to do it again the next day.

I don’t know, I got to drive a 2020 Huracan Evo yesterday, put it in sport mode and thought I was in an F1 car. The sound was glorious, down shifts had nice backfire burbles you could hear for days....

Absolutely, second to none as far as ferrari sounds.

embedded for easier watching

Anyone know what cars were used in this video. My google fu isn't turning up a list (which is surprising). I've found one place that says "Watch five different Ferrari Formula One cars dating back to 1952, take to the streets of Rome, New York, Rio, Hong Kong and Monaco in a celebration of the ongoing Shell and Ferrari technical partnership"

#1 apparently 1952
#2 1967?
#3 197x?
#4 199x?
#5 2006-7?

I believe these days most Matra's aren't revved out as far as back in the day.

Must have been an impressive sound.

The sound clips of the 1.5L BRM is pretty impressive as well.

Here's some good sound of the BRM V16. From about 3:30 there's what sounds like in-car audio. That's a 1.5 liter supercharged V16. I've laid my hands on some parts from that engine - ridiculously TINY pistons!

However, some of the photos in the video segment are of another crazy BRM engine, the 3 liter H16. This was two flat 8's, one above the other, with the crankshafts geared together. Reputedly that made almost as much noise from the geartrain as came out the exhaust!

Sound is subject to personal preference so its hard to say any one sound is best. Here is a sound I find more pleasing to the senses than a Ferrari at 1/10 the cost. This is a perfectly tuned MV Agusta F4 on the Nurburgring.
