Question NW Nevada DMV questions

Yes, I tried contacting the DMV, but it's like trying to reach the Pope

We are considering the Reno area and the surrounding counties within about a 50 mile radius. We have 11 acres in Storey county ,but may elect for somewhere different.

My questions are....

Can I have non-op cars/bikes and leave them as a non-op,as long as they are on my property and uninsured?

Do I have to transfer them from their no-op Calif. status to Nevada non-op status or just leave them be till I'm ready to make them road worthy? Seems to me they would not know they even existed.

What can I expect for insurance rates and DMV fees vs what I pay here in Southern Calif.?

Thanks very much for any and all input

Just moved from southern Cal to the Las Vegas area. I'm still in the middle of changing drivers license before I register cars but here is what I've found so far. Insurance is much more expensive in the L V area almost double of Cal. I was shocked when I switched and I did shop around a bit .I have been told by numerous sources that car reg is based on two things. If the car is 10 years old or more reg fees are low about $100 or so. If it's newer the fee is based on the cars value . Example ,a new Pcar would be about $1000 to register. Again this is what I've been told by a couple of people so take this with a grain of salt

Thanks Alansglide! I too heard that the LV area was pricey and was hoping it would taper off up where we are looking

A LOT less crime in suburban Sparks than there is in LV.

Seems like they ought to have a website with FAQ section

It may not be the crime factor altogether. Las Vegas traffic is insane just like SoCal and with liquor being served 24/7 it's a tough town. NW NV should be different.

AFA as the cars are concerned there is likely no law that states a car stored on private land should need any more than what you are willing to do AFA registration. If so, it;s only going to be the local code for storing vehicles in sight on private land. Inside, you have no worries. A $20 or 21 fee (IDK the current fee) is good until you want to register the car, no renewals like there was once several years ago.

When you want to register the cars in NV, be sure to have all your documents and plates.

You can also contact an independent fee based registration service for advice on the matter in your new location. Not actually handling your transaction advice should be free.

I bought a 911 on a bill of sale with no recent registration history from KY and I had it shipped. Upon arrival I got it running and drove it to the independent guy. I had insurance. They looked the car over for the VIN and I showed them where to find it in 2 places, the windshield and the stamp near the smuggler's box. With that, they issued a temp and I got the pink in the mail within the month along with new plates. It was exempt from smog so I didn't even need a brakes and lights cert. That's one to watch out for.

Omg another CA liberal to fk up nv.

Nv is the third world...ins rates are high because of the drunks and crazies here. They seem to like to play red light roulette.

Nice of you to assume I'm a liberal but you're wrong by a large margin. I'm a conservative and that was a major factor in my leaving California.

Are you by chance moving to VC highlands?? I’m up here and would be happy to have a local Pelican to talk card with. Storey county is the best!!

are you inside a city or out in the county?

as an example, in Eugene, Oregon you must have unlicensed vehicles stored behind a fence or covered up - enforcement is only by complaint; otherwise, they don't check

but right outside the city limits, Lane county rules apply and you can stack up derelict vehicles or parts thereof as much as you want

so I doubt Reno/Sparks is any more stringent and DMV is not the issue for that, here

Thumbs up

Thanks for the replies! Well, we are trying to be in the county, not the city, just don't know which one yet, but I do agree with your assessment

Steve, as you probably know VC Highlands are at least $100k cheaper than the sea of houses down the grade in Reno.. Plus we have trees, wild horses, mountain lions, bears , bobcats, coyotes..
Let me know when you're up here next!! I've got a 2 post lift if you ever need one too!!

Used to live in Carson City until last year...

There isn't a no-op status like there is in CA, you basically return the plates to the DMV and be done with it. I've certainly had very non-op motorcycles parked in the garage with no problems, and we used to live in a place where the neighbour had a whole collection on non-plated yard art. IIRC a lot of this depends on the county or city more than anything else.

One other thing to contemplate is that in Northern NV, only Washoe County/Reno have emissions testing.
