I think I've seen that it's possible to backdate the instrument cluster, but I'm not positive.

I know it’s possible to fit a 5 gauge 996 cluster in the 986, and do some wiring/programming to make it work. But I thought that was all that differs between say a 1999 986 and a 1999 996. Interior-wise, of course, sans the back seats.

I voted boxster, would have voted neither if the option existed.

09 and up seems to be the only boxster cayman worth owning unless you like scored cylinders.

They are almost 100% identical. Most parts interchange. The only thing that could feel cheaper are options between cars. Seats, dash, door panels, trim pieces, all the same.

I have had a 2001 Boxster S and now own a 2004 C4S coupe. I'd vote C4S but loved the Boxster. For me the Gen 1 Boxster was a bit too small in terms of interior room for my frame or I'd probably still have it. I needed another inch or so of seat travel. Longer term I'll likely get a 2009+ Boxster or 911 Cabrio as I miss having a soft top for our climate. The full leather on the C4S makes the interior feel much higher end.

Full leather is definitely more luxurious but you could get it with a Boxster too. Mine has it.
