My 66', pictured below, has about 325 hp and has numerous upgrades to keep me and the car in one piece: Radiator; Monte Carlo bar; roll bar; built T-5 tranny & driveshaft; frame connectors; traction bars; 9" rear end w/axles; performance suspension/brakes; etc, etc, etc.

Even if you only upgrade to the 300 hp engine, you are definitely going to have to upgrade your car.

Absolutely a drool car...best Mustang body shape ever. But I'd be nervous parking it behind a pool hall. Later today, an '09 Bullitt Mustang will be doing just that.

A darned good post with sound advice from one who has been there-done that.

Yep GH85, the Ford performance 302's aren't cheap. But all forged internals aren't for a Chevy small block either.

?? Why not. Plenty of SBC have all forged internals, but they don't normally require that until you're making a ton of power.

Are the Ford motors making tons of power or just have to be built extra sturdy so they don't grenade themselves?

Nope.

The 235 is all cast iron. The 300 is also all cast iron except hypereutectic pistons. The 300 has a roller cam and .5 increased compression over the 235 (9.0 vs 8.5). The 390 is running the same cam as the 300 but upgraded Al heads and another .5 increase in compression over the 300 (9.5 vs 9.0). The 390 is also all cast (also hypereutectic pistons) but is blueprinted (vs the 235 and 300 NOT blueprinted).

235 - all cast
300 - Difference from the 235 - roller cam, hypereutectic pistons, increased compression by .5
390 - Difference from the 235 - roller cam (SAA), hypereutectic pistons, Al heads, blueprinted, increased compression by 1.0

Based on that, I assume the 235 and 300 will be essentially the same weight (all cast iron) and the 390 will be lighter by the difference in weight between cast and Al heads, so what 50-60#s?

That's a nice summary Steve.

I pulled the trigger on the 235hp.
With the money I *saved* I am getting a disc brake conversion kit.
Thanks again for all the input.

That sounds like a great choice/combo.

I had a '65 Chevy Impala 2 dr when I was 16. It had a low powered 350 2bbl and a 4spd with 4.10 gears. It was fun, but not really all that fast, but even then the drum brakes sucked. I'd have really loved to have disks.

The 235 hp motor is that with stock cast iron exhaust manifolds and a single outlet exhaust ? Are you planning on running steel tube headers and a dual exhaust ? I would think you can pick up a little more power with a well designed exhaust . I would think 250 hp in that chassis would be a lot of fun and probably fairly economical on fuel . Also is that 235 with a 2 barrel or 4 barrel carb ? Have fun with it .

Shoot, that reminds me...
I need to get some headers!
Not sure about the exhaust setup on the dyno, I would assume headers to get the bigger numbers.
It is a 4bbl.
I am pretty excited, except that I havent told wifey yet.
She will find out Wednesday when the big box arrives!

Street car engine

Just remember the old saying: "Horsepower sells cars, torque wins races!" If I was making the choice, I think I would pick the 300 hp engine and pop on one of the new 4 bbl type fuel injection units. Just my .02 cents worth!

But the 300hp engine makes less torque in the range that he plans to use the car than the 235hp engine.

The 235 will run harder than you might think and you can upgrade the brakes (which you should do anyway even if you went flat out stock).

It is essentially impossible for me to walk away from HP... 1500 or so pounds with fluids and some 300ish HP. Really...really...really LOVE horsepower....

Remember HP is what drives the Stang into the crowd
Torque is what makes it plow right through it

Good choice on the brakes. Probably want to do the shocks and take a good look at the front end while you are in there to do the brakes too. Those parts are really reasonable (compared to the P-cars).

You guys sure are good at spending other people's money!
But good point, while the cars on the lift with engine out, may as well refresh steering and suspension.
