So glad I got in before the madness.
I paid 15k for this with just a tick over 100 k on it about 6 years ago .
I've put 50 on it, an taken really good care of it . I said when I bought it , that I would probably own it for the rest of my life . I most likely will . I could not afford to replace it and would not even want to . The very last year of zero emissions duramax .

Ive got a 2500 lb 150 ft roll of carpeting in there this morning . It would crush a half ton truck . Plus I was pulling a trailer with a Blazer on it this morning. My life does not work without a heavy duty truck .
Ill keep this one for heavy hauling , and road trips, and I decided to keep my other 225 k mile rusty gas truck for work truck status, and Im good to go .
Like you Sid, I started to shop for a replacement for my other truck early this summer, and just said, no way . Not putting that much coin into a work truck

Fred that's a great pic , the first thing I noticed in your pic is the leaf springs look like they barely moved with that 2500 lb. load . I have a 2001 GMC one ton 4x4 diesel dually and it is the same way ............. load it up it just doesn't care . I purchased it several years ago with just under 100k on it and as I type this I'm a little over 170k . She still runs strong with no major issues and I'm hoping the next milestone will be 300k . There is no way I could afford to replace it in today's pricing . And like you stated the fuel mileage these beasts can achieve is remarkable , I do not have a tune in mine but have removed the muffler and replaced with a straight pipe . Set the cruise at 55 or 60 and this 7300 lb. rolling thunder get 20 mpg !!!

So Fred, what year is your truck and what is a "zero emissions Duramax?"

EDIT: I just looked at your sig line and saw 2004.

fastfredracing 10-04-2019 07:45 AM

Up to early 2004, there was no emissions equipment. Just a common rail diesel engine, and a muffler . No EGR, no cat, no dpf no fluid. nada.
Any and all mods are 100% legal.

Fred if you don't mind me asking what tune are you running ? Are you monitoring EGT ? Who's tuner ? I have toyed with the idea in the past but never pulled the trigger . My understanding is an extra 100 ft. lbs. of torque is considered a mild tune. My stock 2001 from the factory was 300 hp and 525 torque .

Almost a year in, and I am still enjoying my 2005 Ram 1500. But, I have been looking at prices of newer Rams and the "Classic" which is a 2019 4th gen.

Prices are crazy for FCA vehicles right now (as mentioned in the Challenger/Hellcat thread). I'm seeing them marked down $9-12k. If I hadn't just bought a CX-5 I would be considering one.

I am hoping it lasts until I don't need a truck any more.

Rings true........ I finally parted with my '99 Tahoe LT. It was a great truck that served its tasks well, including long distance towing and general hauling crap around. I got a grand for it and the guy got a good deal. It owed me nothing. I did all my own wrenching.

I have hankered for a pick up for a decade, but it just didn't makes sense financially. I found an '18 F250 4x4 SuperDuty (gas) in Lariat / crew cab, and put a Boss V plow on it.

The truck had 13k on the clock....... I won't put that on it in the next 10 years. Compared to what a new one goes for, I am VERY happy with my purchase.

The thing is a monster and 20.5 feet long (without the plow) and yet it weighs less than the Tahoe. Aluminum.

The aluminum Super Duty weighs more than the sheet metal PU truck it replaced because of the beefed-up frame. The body weighs less but the truck weighs more. It was still arguably worth doing because it would have gained a lot more w/o aluminum body.

Hard to believe that your '99 Tahoe weighed more than the truck, which is 7500 lbs. at least but maybe. I've driven the exact truck you own and it was fantastic. The newest gas engine has great torque and unless you are towing really heavy, is a better choice than the Power Stroke.

Neighbors friend showed up with a yellow Ford Tonka Truck. $110,000 !http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1570305741.jpg

That is nutz, when an F350 King Ranch can be had for $35k less.......

An F350 Lariat superduty diesel can be had for under 70K and that is still stupid money for a pick up.

Americans are fiends for pu trucks. Having a pu is like taking dope for Americans. They gotta have one, as soon as they get 10 cents ahead they head down and buy a pu. That is why Americans are broke, the education system and roads are all falling apart. It is all because of those dam pu trucks Americans are addicted to.

Yes, definitely monitoring EGT. They sneak up pretty fast on long climbs. I have it set to alarm at 1150. I am using an older EDGE Juice with attitude . It has 5 tunes, from 30 up to 125 hp. I run on setting 1 mostly , but get the best mileage on setting 3 on the highway . I only tow in the lower setting .
We basically have the same drivetrain, so your results should be similar . If I had to do it again, I would be using EFI live . but my goal was not max power, just wanted to turn the wick up some, and get better fuel economy .
Im pretty happy with it overall .
I love this truck. I do not use it every day, but could not be without it .
