Crazy pickup prices!
 

I’m starting to shop for something with 4WD that can haul a load, as we want to do more camping and buy an RV or some land.

I’m noticing that people want crazy money for used trucks and SUVs.

Want something built in the last 10 years that’s not beaten to death, modified, or north of 150k miles. That’ll be $25k plus.


Anyone else noticing this trend of the used stuff seeming crazy high priced? Or is it just a PHX thing and I need to search farther out?

Trucks are utility vehicles and thus retain value..

On the other hand, RV's depreciate like crazy...maybe look there?

Yep beat to ****, modded, and high dollar. It's an Arizona thing. Sunshine year round. Everyone is a weekend warrior.....

I never bought a pick up in AZ used. Mind as well grab your ankles. Same with new now in days. My single cab cummins came with a 50k sticker. I didn't pay anywhere near that much, but that's what they're going for.

I've had good luck with oil field trucks from Texas. Not a bad deal if you have a few buddies and a weekend. Buy 2-3, sell them when you get back to AZ for some stupid profit. If you title them at third party mvd they usually loop hole taxes on the Texas titles. Don't do it at the DMV they'll collect sales tax...

That's prolly the best advice I have.

I think it also depends where you like. In Hawaii, people love their Toyota Tacomas. I swear, a 5 year old Tacoma sells for the same as new.

With your DIY skills, why limit your search to less than 10 years...Mebbe search for a good older truck that needs some TLC? Lots of 'em out there....

i would pay 75k fer a new truck before I'd drop 25k on one 10 yrs old....and neither is gonna happen...YMMV.

Cash or credit? The latter is why prices are inflated across the board....imho.

If you start talking about 3/4, or 1 ton trucks with 4WD, and diesel, people think they are made out of gold. For the same price as a 15 year old diesel truck in good shape, you can get a 5 year old gas truck that has about the same amount of power/torque (gas motors have came a long way in the last 10 years).

A 5.0L F150 has the same pulling capacity as my 1999 powerstroke.

Look at new prices, there’s your answer. New trucks are crazy expensive, hence people look used and the values reflect that. I’m amazed what you can spend on a new 1/2 or 3/4 ton truck.

It's not just Arizona. It is everywhere. I just traded in my 12 year old Silverado, 100k miles and 2wd with some rust on the bed sides, and they gave me $7500 for it. I only paid $22k for it new! I really didn't expect that much, but that means they will sell it for much more.

You can easily spend $50k, on a new 1/2 ton truck. A fully-optioned diesel 1 ton can almost double that. Even Mercedes-Benz is building a pickup truck.

I'm staying away from trucks for awhile until things calm down. I just bought a 1 ton van. It's really hard to get one over $40k new, and they lose half their value in the first year, so I bought a year-old one.

You must be looking for a diesel if you're having problems finding one for 25K

For this reason, I have decided to quit dailying a pick up. It just does not make sense anymore. Between the buy in price, and fuel mileage , just does not pen out . Ill keep my old worn out trucks, and use them like a truck when I need them, and just drive a car every day .
For 2500 series truck money, I can have a pretty darn nice p car , or 3 daily drivers .

I bought the Land Cruiser for the same reason...I was putting crazy miles on my Tundra (110K in less than five years) and do not want to get another truck for at least five more years.

The LC is my DD.

The only vehicles I buy new are trucks...

I sold my mint condition 2013 F150 Ecoboost 4x4 Supercrew with 90k for $24k to my little brother in law and could have easily gotten a lot more. That was the good deal family member price.

I don't get it :confused: The gas truck market seems about the same to me. I was helping a friend look for a late model low mileage F150 and was seeing them for around 25 to 28K. I just did some looking and saw some 2016 F250 XLT's with 35-38000 miles priced the same as I bought my 30,000 mile 2012 F250 Crew Cab 4x4 for two years ago (28K)

I got in buying a really clean '06 even more than that with only 79K on it 6 years ago for 12K. Lousy like models were 16 on the lots. 2WD Ext cab 1500. I think the market went nuts shortly thereafter. I might be able to get quite a bit of my cost back today. It's still only at 90K. I don't drive far.

I am constantly amazed at how much early Tundra's sell for on CL. Mine is beat to hell and I like it that way but look now and again to find a 4x4 for winter. A very nice 2001 Tundra is a $10K truck around here. Nice ones are $6K. That said, you just can't beat them for reliability and size... a 2019 Tacoma is the same size as a 2001 Tundra but without the 4' wide bed. I'm not a fan of the monster trucks for sale today, too hard to park.

If you're retired and don't have a $100,000 Dodge diesel pickup towing a $200,000 5th wheel you're nobody.

I flew in to buy my F150 from Mike at Jones Motors in mesa. Good honest guy who gets clean used vehicles. Tell him what you want and he can get it. Right now he has a Ford and some Nissans in 4x4.

Well I ain't retired, and I don't want or have a 100K pickup and I don't want or have a 5th wheel. I guess I am nobody, and happy to be.

I had a guy at a local restaurant asking about my 100K (in his mind) 85 911, and he was driving a new 75K pickup. He figured I spent a lot for my car, but I know he spent a lot more for his pickup.
