As impressive as Grace Slick, at least to me...

Okay, so I checked her out. Decent pipes, couldn't stand the songs I listened to... not my cup of tea, doubt she'll ever make the big time.

Patsy was pretty talented. Not a fan of her genre, though I could listen to Crazy occasionally. Definitely talented.

Linda was good, too. Always a favorite of mine. Saw her live in her prime, as I did with Grace, thought Grace was the better singer live. Would have been happy to go home with either of them.

Garbage sucks. The singer can't hold a candle to these others we're discussing, the band as a whole is nothing special. Wake me when they hit the big time. It's all relative.

Dolly has has a lot of success but, as nice a person as she is, I couldn't listen to her for long. Not my cup of tea, at all.

As for the rest of you, this thread isn't a debate about who's the best female vocalist of all time. It's just as chance to listen to a track that none of us have ever heard and to appreciate for a few minutes the talent that one person had. I'm not aware of any formal voice training she had and she came of age in an era where that sort of coaching was relatively rare, compared to today. It was also before they invented all of the band-aids available to the modern vocalist. I thought the recording was very interesting and worth a listen.

Ya wanna worship your own gods, hit that new thread button.

Many People know that the first Video on MTV, was "the buggles - video killer the radio star"

BUT

no one remembers the 2nd video. "You better run, you better Hide" and wow she is young .

her jaw line was always a wet dream with my own Instrument.

Wow, back in the days when MTV played videos! I remember turning it on and letting it play for hours. In the same era there was a cable channel that was nothing but women exercising while wearing tight clothes. I laughed out loud when I found that one. It was a lot of yoga as I remember.

If you isolate the singer from the Garbage video you will find a rather average voice singing with a band. Nothing special. Are there talented singers out there today? Probably, but the majority are just average talent with an attitude and auto-tune.
Take out the band, visual show, effects, and enhancements there isn't much left.
Who from 1999 forward compares to Grace, Joan Baez, Emmylou Harris, Joni Mitchell?

herr_oberst 09-05-2019 07:28 PM

Nobody compares to Grace, Joan, Joni, et al. These are different times, the world is moving faster and instead of mellow moods, we wake up every day stressed out. The music has changed and the singers have changed to match. I like women vocalists that have an edge, like Shirley, from Garbage or maybe some of this:

herr_oberst 09-05-2019 07:33 PM

And some more. This music has depth and power. In My Humble Opinion. Your Mileage May Vary.

Man, it makes me laugh how often members of one generation always say the same hogwash about generations that follow. It must suck biggly to have such a narrow, past-reaching scope.

Check out Cass Elliot in the audience getting blown away along with everyone else at the MPF as Janis leaves every little piece of her heart on the stage in this epic version of Ball and Chain.

Janice was willing to lay her soul bare to the audience. That made her a unique artist for that time. She wasn't a great singer but she sure could emote.

Thank you! Thank you all! That was great!

OK, so now I’ve listened to both studio and live versions of that song. I think she has an interesting voice, and I think she could use better material, but I don’t think her voice is in the same league as Grace Slick in her prime. You may like her better than I do, and that is just fine.

That said, I guess I still have to state again that the point of this thread wasn’t to debate who the best singer was, even though the thread title might suggest something along those lines. It was simply to encourage you to listen to a vocal track that I don’t think you’d ever hear anywhere else, and that I found to be pretty amazing. If you knew how many things were manipulated in vocal tracks now, that probably (or definitely) were not available in the 1960s, I think you’d understand where I’m coming from.

True, but, given the choice, I’d rather listen to someone who’s voice is a little more pleasant.

There are a lot of vocalists who have had quite a bit of success, without having what I consider a very good voice. Cat Stevens comes to mind, as does Rod Stewart.

Music is funny in that way.

Tracy Chapman - Fast car & Give me one reason
Alanis - You Oughta Know - Jagged little pill

Joan Jett - saw her live last year, still got "it" great performance.
