Get off my lawn!

What species of snake is this?
It is pretty. I think it is a rat snake, and I hope he moves on soon. One of my friends would call it a Copper headed-rattle-moccasin with a coral tip. We just left him alone on the back porch and hope he moves on down the line. He knows we have dogs, and that is why he is on the wall. The dogs are locked out of the back yard.

Generally beneficial, although you might not like it eating baby birds and stuff that's cute.

I think that's a corn snake, a variety of rat snake. Definitely beneficial and not venomous.

Definitely a RAT snake. They keep the rodent population down.

We have the occasional mouse, that get under the storage shed. Our male dachshund goes on the hunt and has caught a few. When he is mouse hunting it tells me to set up the mouse traps, and with technology and peanut butter, I can catch more than the dog. The mice get all trapped out, I am happy, and the dog is sad.
As soon as we cleared off of the porch, the snake turned around, went down and disappeared. We will give him an hour the clear the property, and give full access to the back yard for the dogs.

G'day!
|
I had a very young rat snake show up here yesterday morning. He wasn't bothering anyone. Shuffled off to do his thing - which I appreciated.
And very beautiful - wish I could have photographed it.

That's cool.
He wouldn't be there if there weren't mice around!

Hopefully he ate them and will move on. We don't have a resident population. If we did the dogs would be in mouser mode.

I'm quite certain it's not a trouser snake.

We had a lot of mice in the garage. A couple snakes like that one (but a lot bigger) showed up and then a skunk in the back field. No mice at all for months.

Here's the skin shed from our front flowerbed resident rat snake. He's been around for at least 2 or 3 years, which remarkably is when the chipmunks in the front bed disappeared

Sorry I don’t have a picture to post but I can vouch for Sooner or Later on the Dachshund. We have a miniature one that in her younger years and when we lived on the farm was fast enough to catch a mouse at a dead run. The real fun was watching her play with it until it accidentally got bit too hard....

This is Reuben. Our mouse early alert system. Actually he is the early alert system for mice, squirrels, rabbits, birds, snakes, and most assuredly skunks. Also anyone walking a dog near the house. He has chased off all the elephants, wolves, and buffalo from the area, but he still alerts to keep them all away. If he begins to circle the storage building, it means he smells mice. I put out fresh traps. He catches some as a snack. I get more with thumbs, technology and peanut butter.
