Mighty Neighborly...

We had an interesting night at our place... a neighbors nurse cow was stuck in the mud but he was busy combining. I offered to try pulling out the cow when I get home for him. When I get to the cow, I noticed it had a nose and some feet sticking out the back of it. I assumed it aborted its pregnancy due to the stress. I pulled out the cow and then pulled the calf. The calf was very much alive. We are not sure if momma is going to make it but we have a new bottle calf at our place. We will try and get it acquainted with one of our nurse cows over the next few days.

Since this was a nurse cow that was stuck in the mud, the neighbor had no idea it was pregnant and told me to just keep the calf... we have another from our herd that is 2 days old so this will probably work out ok.

Must have a ninja bull that got into the herd!

Kind of a weird time to be calving, isn't it?

Nice save, btw.

Cows calve 9 months after conception. They calve out dairy cows year round to keep milk production consistent throughout the year.

It’s normal to have a dairy cow or 2 in a beef herd to act as a nurse cow for orphan calves. That’s what this was. I have 2 dairy cows in my herd too.

We had a calf the other day because the cow got bred late. We also have another in the herd that is a first calves that hasn’t calved yet. We will keep those 2 cows away from the bull until next June / July.
