Dog Cat Relations help

I have my mother in laws dog for two week. King Charles terrier. He is determined to eat my cat. Any ideas besides beating the dog to get it to stop. It killed my rabbit a couple years back. Trying to avoid another issue.

It's a nice dog, just hates cats, squirrels and other non dog small animals. Snores like a freight train. Waiting to leave.

Thanks,
David

It doesn't hate them. It loves them and thinks they taste like chicken.

I don't know what to tell you other than to just keep them separated/isolated.

Good luck.

Does the cat have claws? If so, the dog will only mess with it ONCE. Unless the cat is extra fat and lazy, it can hold it's own.

My old doberman was a wonderful dog. Smart and friendly to all. Until she saw a at any distance. She went into a killing rage, and became deaf and stupid. She killed several cats that made the fatal mistake of coming into my back yard, well her back yard. One was the neighborhood mean tom cat that had whipped several dogs. There was no stopping her her cat killing fever.

I had one cat that loved my front flower bed as a litter box. That cat jumped straight up to the roof with a turd half way out when I let her out front to stop the cat crap at my front door issue. Never saw that cat again.

It disappoints me that you would intentionally try to kill someone's cat like that.

Bring a junk yard cat home. I had one as a young kid. It grew up in a junk yard patrolled by GSD's and Pincers. It whipped a K9 Pincer from the Korean War that lived at the house behind ours. Best cat I ever had.

If the dog has killed a pet previously, it should not have been invited back.

Crate it or find a doggy day care.

I just was real tired of cat turds and cat piss right by my front door. I figured the cat had lots of escape routes. Cat was unharmed, and escaped as I figured it would. He never used my front porch flower bed as a cat box after that. I really think one reason that cat loved to use my flower bed there was it was in full view of the large picture window, and the my dog going crazy inside. It learned that was not a safe place to be.

I would take no chances and crate / kennel the dog and have it on a leash. No free roaming where the cat could be. Do NOT assume the cat will defend itself. You will risk injury to the dog and death to the cat if you allow them to meet.

I know it is the MIL's dog, so maybe you have less sympathy for it, but killing smaller furry things is an instinct in dogs. Only if they grow up around cats etc. will you have a fair chance they won't have the desire ...

I would have put an end to the dog sitting with the death of the rabbit. You are taking on a lot of responsibility. Not worth it, IMO.

Which would you rather say; ''Sorry, but it killed my rabbit.'', or, ''Oh well, it was just a cat.'' ? My cat was attacked by a dog once, and it would have died if I hadn't kicked that dog in the ribs with all I had. The cat almost didn't make it. I loved that cat more than almost anyone. I would have killed that dog if the kick hadn't been sufficient. Decent sized Husky, and it came into my garage. Friendliest cat in the world.

If it wasn't my mother in laws dog I certainly wouldn't have taken it.

The house is on lock down now. Gates, barriers, cat locked in basement, dog put in car, so on and so forth.
I guess there is no fixing dog. Leaves tomorrow.

If you care about your cat, the dog has to find another place to stay.

Shame we don't live closer. I'd lend you Tomtom. He would absolutely maul the kingie if he misbehaved.

Every dog needs a bad experiance with a cat.

What we do in this country if dogs are being taken into the mountains and likely to attack a Kiwi (a bird, not a rugby player) is they go on a Kiwi aversion training course - the same would apply with this dog.

They just put an electric dog collar on the dog, and when he gets close to the Kiwi they blast him. They do this twice and the dog won't even look at a Kiwi for the rest of it's life.

I've had 4 dogs that get along with cats just fine. The problem you have is that it takes months of strict discipline to get them to that point. Under no circumstance should you watch that dog knowing he is not properly trained to be around cats. The cat will most definitely end up dead. Unfortunately your just not in a position to help out in your present situation. Dont stress, they have dog kennel services for this very reason.

Okay,

We have the opposite problem. Our cat is a badass 23pound Maine coon. He has never hesitated to claw the **** out of anything. We’ve come home to find the neighbor’s dog cornered and cowering on the back deck because the cat had him trapped. He will smack the crap out of our five year old heeler when the play gets too rough.

Six months ago we got a new puppy. And the cat will not stand up to it. The puppy torments our big guy. He’s taken to hiding in the linen closet. I know just one good slash will sort things out. But he won’t do it. What’s going on?
