I have owned 20+ aircooled cars and my stock M491 is one of my favorites. One of the few I regret selling. We have built some very fun turbos, but there were not stock. Modified turbos, fuel systems, gearing or some combination of each. My current favorite build is a 92 turbo with a tweaked turbo, WUR, complete exhaust and a short geared gearbox. Now that car is fun for all types of driving. Far more fun than my beloved M491. Cheers |
Not sure if it was an M491, but had the pleasure of driving a 1986 930, in the rain. Hooked up well out back, not so much in front. It was a cab.
Interesting thread.;) |
Jeff,
My last air cooled 911 was a twin plugged, heavily modified ‘92 964T that was very capable and a blast to drive. Prior to that was an ‘86 3.2 cab that I really enjoyed. I wanted to like the 930, but just didn’t in stock form, now the ones I drove were not ‘89’s with the 5 speed so that might have made a difference. I came VERY close to buying a M491 car and would have enjoyed it I am sure. However life’s short, so I decided on my 997.2 GT3RS just to change it up a bit. |

I know that it is an amazing track weapon, how about on the street? Lots of fun? Enjoyable or does it beat you to death? :) |
Sorry for delay in responding.
The easiest way to explain it for me is that a lot of the newer 911's have become really good GT cars, the RS is more analog. Yes, it is a bit rough on the street but it doesn't beat you up too bad. My 13yo son fell asleep riding in it about 2.5 hours home on the highway for a PCA drive, so it can't be that bad... The trans need to be warmed up some for it to shift smoothly and the throttle response is very quick. All in all, it is a car that begs to be driven and is a shame so many of them just get put in garages. |
They are all good - and they all have their own personalities - sort of like this board. Luckily Porsche built some variety even in their 911 series so there is something for everybody.

I totally agree Jeremy. Over the years I have had the pleasure of owning an '86 cab, '92 Turbo and an 03 996TT.
