Best health insurance?
Am looking for advice on insurance providers that offer major illness, major medical health care coverage without charging an arm & leg. Point being, I'm in relatively good health and would rather pay out of pocket for Dr. visits and have lower premium... but be covered in case something catastrophic occurs. Input, comments, guidance, etc would be much appreciated.
Edit... I no longer work---and don't want to take a job for insurance benefits. Am not X military. In fairly good condition. No "existing conditions." Not qualified for Medicare. By the way, I spoke with PCA about this. They do not offer any affiliated health insurance---suggested they should. They do have links to car insurers. I got a quote from LELANDWEST for my "modified" '80 Targa driving 3k miles yearly. Typical coverage for Miami = $360 annually. Going to check company before signing up..

If your work, hobby, age or other interests offer group coverage - really that's the first step. It may be obvious but the larger the spread of risk, the better coverage per dollar cost to you, generally speaking.
Also, it's no secret that as technology advances in health care and medicine moves forward so does the cost. I recently overheard a conversation where a guy said we have access to the best health care in the world, but face the possibility of going bankrupt paying the bill / co-pay when a major event happens.

I sell group coverage. I'm in Oregon. Can't say anything intelligent about Florida. I'm not even licensed there.
1. Group will most likely be best 2. Connect with an expert. Ask friends for an independent agent in Florida. This is not that difficult if you have the right people to ask. |

You need to become a politician, and get on the congressional health insurance program. Even better yet get into high office, and then your health coverage is free, and top notch.

Work for a major medical center and sign up for their plan. $200/mo and everything is no/low out of pocket costs. It might be worth taking a janitorial job just for the bennies in CA. My wife is an RT and I can't believe how much better this plan is vs an individual plan through an insurance agent.

I am without health insurance for the first time in my adult life. I always carried a family policy, being self employed once Obamacare rolled out, my premium was going to be a few hundred more a month than my mortgage payment. Therefore I am taking my chances. We keep talking about getting a HSA or something like that now. With a kid in private school for 2 more years I am going to have to take my chances. Once he is done, I welcome college tuition it will be a bargain. Then I can look into insuring myself again. Government - ruined schools and ruined health insurance. What should have been done was reigning in the cost of health CARE not insurance. The insurance went up in response to care costs, further exasperated by the notion that they would have to lock in their prices indefinitely once Obamacare kicked in.

Not applicable to many but some that might not know.
I had Kaiser for 35 years. Paid along with my employer for the insurance. I never thought of my four years in the service gave me free medical with the Veterans Administration. . Don't like paying for medical insurance? Are you a Vet? Take your DD214 to the nearest V.A. facility and they will honor your service. My Marine Corp buddy from Vietnam turned me on to this. I didn't know and now I have medical for the rest of my life with very little or no co-pay. |

My aunt was in the Marines (at least I "think" it was the Marines....wasn't the Navy for sure) in/around San Diego in the early 60s, and another uncle served in the AF in Alaska (maintenance, etc) late 60s. Both have relied on the VA for care in return for their service. Uncle...not much, no need, but it's been awesome for my aunt who has had lots of issues over the yesrs....a life saver. The VA isn't perfect but they did open a really nice facility much closer which makes it a LOT easier for my aunt these days.

My Insurance company dropped everyone in this area.. citing expense...all at once, is that even legal? (yes) fair? (no) Coverage was still in effect for everyone else (who lived everywhere else, suburbs /other states etc. ) Since then haven't been able to get back on anything (for such a good price ) those days are over.
I try to stay healthy. When I lived in Germany for six moths health insurance coverage was a legal requirement, to maintain legal residency, they offered me a deal: insurance for six months ONE TIME FEE : $250. Didn't use it once. Their system works & it is affordable, according to friends who have been in ( and out of ) German hospitals, the health care is VERY good, and did I mention it is affordable?
