Having that thing available to you would certainly make a work commute more lively.

First thing I thought when he got by that first obstacle, was it would sure suck if he rolled back and had to do it again. Second thing I thought was how come he doesn't run out of gas. Then he ran out of gas. (Or he overheated or both....)

Glad he didn't flip over.
Those tires are amazing, they are spinning over a jagged rock edge without being punctured.

How often does he rebuild that clutch or engine?

Great video but luck seems to play a big part with these rock hoppers. If you get the tyres on the right piece of dirt then that may be enough to get you to the next big obstacle.
The engineering must be extreme to get that sort of durability out of the engine and drive train.

There is a place not far from here that has these competitions several times a year.
Like Autocross, the course is different for every event.
The guy who has acreage adjoining mine spends quite a bit of time on dozers and excavators making the course, and helps build some of these buggys.

Interesting to look at the different design philosophies as competitors show up.
Lots of mayhem. Military Rockwell axles broken, frames cracking, engines blowing, and sometimes, upside down.

Lots of elements, and there is a time limit. Some courses there are several finishers, best time is the winner.
Other courses, it's just who gets the farthest before a major stuck or break-down.

Probably the best thing- Over 90 acres of 4x4 playground, and it's a free-for-all with admission.
Outside of the current competition area, the rest of the place is crawling with all kinds of heavily-modified Jeeps, pick-ups, and custom-built whatevers.
Get stuck? Plenty of others get their tow straps and winches to help.

I lived in Farmington NM back in the early 2000's and rock crawling was all the rage. Lots of killer events in Choke Cherry Canyon on BLM land. Of course the referenced video shows that they continue to stretch the envelope but even back then the grades that could be conquered were mind boggling to say the least....steep did not even begin to describe, so steep you couldn't walk up it. Some amazing and expensive rigs..
