Rear view mirror with GPS and more
So I have been thinking about replacing the rear view mirror in my Boxster to one that has GPS/rear camera/Bluetooth . Would like Android compatible to link to my phone. That's where my knowledge ends 😁 Any of you guys done this recently ?
Are lifetime GPS updates available on some brands ? Can a " good " kit be purchased in the 200.00 to 300.00 range ? If you have recommendations on brand that would be helpful . Like everyone else I have a stand alone GPS that works fine but the cord is a pain in the butt . Then if you need to charge a phone you have cords all over the place . I don't HAVE to have this but WANT this if reasonably priced and it works . |

that's a lot of stuff in a rear view mirror.
What year boxster do you have? Could you not put in a new head unit that has the features that you want?

Ah, and the factory radio was a single height too, I think, right?
Interesting. I had no idea that was a thing.

Yes factory radio is single DIN . The modern single and double DIN radios in my opinion just don't look right in an older car . The rear view mirror is more stealth in my opinion .

That product I mentioned earlier has touchscreen controls and you can set it so that the front camera images disappear from the mirror after 30 seconds. The reversing camera is triggered by a positive from the reversing light and the images remain on whilst in reverse with an adjustable graduated scale showing distance to the potential crash. The mirror itself is slightly wider than standard ,is tinted and effective against high beams behind. I think there is a more expensive version with GPS also sold on Amazon

^^^ Yes I did a search on that brand and found they sell several models with varying features . I need to go out and measure the current mirror and estimate how much bigger I can go as I still want to be able to use the visors without interference .

Mom Beard has a Lincoln 2009 MKZ. It is just the wrong side of the model year to be able to use the factory screen for a backup camera. Someone has created a module to make it work, but the module alone is around $500!
What I really need for her is cameras that can be mounted in each side view mirror, even low-res, and integrated together with a backup camera. The house has two single car doors in a double car garage and she regularly hits the center post with her car.

I swapped the mirror in my 911 and El Camino to one with the garage door openers, temperature reading and compass. No backup camera or GPS. My mirrors and my neck work fine. Oh, and the automatically darken when someone is behind me with bright lights. I LOVE that feature.
I understand the backup cameras on cars. My wife's Macan has cameras all the way around the car. It is amazing how well Porsche blends the images o sow the ground in a 360 degree view around the car. The sensors in the front and rear start making noise when you are close to objects as well. For backing up, it is handy.
