"vibe " of other sites..
Always appreciated the Pelican-site wisdom, wouldn't have bought my car 20 years ago w/o Pelican... Each marque attracts it's "type"..and era: Rennlist is more for the water-cooled cars, presents a different demographic. The M3 BMW forum had its share of testosterone-posturing years ago but the E36 guys are now older and more thoughtful, contemplative even, thankfully. When I had a VW those guys @ vw vortex were really nice guys, super-young, though, kids really. Sailing Anarchy.. where the sailing racers and pro's and experts hang-out, some of those guys are straight-up jerks gives the sport a bad name..glad to not be stuck on a boat with those guys. Others are quite civil....funny on the water most folks are super helpful and friendly. What sites , in your opinion have the best information, for your needs and the nicest people?

![]() Serially, I don’t know of another place quite like Pelican. It seems unique in my experience, almost like it evolved by accident to be the way it is when the Internet (and I) were young, and that with the evolution of the Internet it is unlikely that another forum will every catch the same lightning bolt and be as large as PPOT is without going down the rabbit hole.

Yep. Douchebaggery is common on most forums. This is special.

Lot of good people here. A lot of wisdom on many, many subjects and not a lot of jackassery.

I gain Gandalf visiting the hobbits type amusement from Jaguar owners.
Not just online, but in person too. I went with my brother to look at one for sale, owner insisted it was the last Jaguar before Ford. It was a XK, ford bought Jaguar in the late 80's. The XK8 was the first new model rolled out after Ford bought Jaguar. Made me laugh. I was not a brand conscious, but wow, with Jaguar's and their "pedigree" it is a whole 'nother world. That said, there is a lot of crossover in my specific model, in that having a Porsche or Corvette, and X150 all at the same time is not too uncommon. |

I think Pelican is special maybe because of the point in life where most of the forum members seem to be. I've never seen such a collection of expertise on a wide range of subjects assembled in one place (that didn't serve alcohol
).IH8MUD has the same genre-specific expertise (Toyota Land Cruisers) as Pelican, but sometimes a bit of the E36 testosterone-postering comes out.

The only other forums I visit are the various big MB sites, they are pretty much indistinguishable from each other and I never remember which one I'm on while reading a thread. Like most big tech forums, they have a lot of bad info/advice mixed-in w great technical info and knowledge. The key to navigating any tech site is to figure out which posters know wth they are talking about and which ones do not. Opinions fly freely from both.

I'm a Garage Journal member, and it's a terrific site. Very useful in my upcoming build, although hanging out there will cost me money. Also a member on M3post, but, as several have mentioned, it trends towards younger people.

Miata.net isn't Pelican, but it's surprisingly decent considering how cheap miata are (and therefore available to young people). But I don't think average young people go for miata (versus civics, etc...). Plenty of older folks and young folks and poor folks and folks serious about sports cars.
I've been on several other forums very briefly to get questions answered, and can usually find a good forum for just about anything, but they are rarely the level of this place.

I’m also a fan of the adventure rider forum. It’s a lot like this board.
One thing I’ve noticed about the pelican off topic section is that you don’t see a lot of individuals from the tech section post here. That’s different from the way it was 15 to 20 years ago. I’ve been on this board since 2000 and the individual buying an air cooled 911 has certainly changed over the last 20 years. I think a lot of it has to do with how much it cost to buy an air cooled 911 today. Many of the buyers see their car as an investment and not just something to tinker with and have fun driving.

It is like Pelican except for grown ups and R-rated. The trolls are really rude but there are a lot of really cool cats and helpful people. Also, you cannot access OT there unless you are logged in and have posted for a while. Because Rated R. Cursing is allowed and boobies are allowed.

Dear Pelican Forum
I never thought I'd be lucky enough to be writing to you someday, but the other night I was stopped at a red light in a very small town and I had the most amazing encounter.....
