Shooting at Saugus High School, CA today

About three miles from me, I don't know anyone or families that attend. Not political, but the response after it happened around 7:30 AM was amazing, I heard about it on the news and a news alert on my phone, I left for Disneyland at 8:05, cop cars were everywhere, I saw cops coming up the 5 freeway from LA, Glendale, Burbank within another 10 minutes. Kern County Sheriffs helicopter over head at the same time (70-90 miles away). I saw three ambulances headed towards the only hospital, near my house at the same time.

On the way towards D/L on the 5 near us, I bet I saw fifty police cars screaming North.

Bio, don't disagree, but what new laws do we need to have kept this from happening, I don't know.

OK, what I know, or think I know, is that he turned 16 today, he was some sort of Asian, his dad died a year or so ago, he had a 45 with 6 rounds in it. He may have shot himself, I think he died, or is going to die at our local hospital. I SUSPECT that he found his dad's gun with six rounds in it and used it, he couldn't get or figure out how to get more ammo. IDK.

They say he turned it on himself.
Have to be pretty close to get off those rounds with prolly no training.

All speculation like all preliminary post shooting reporting.

It would seem if you are doing this on your 16th birthday there are some deep emotional problems , what caused those problems needs to be investigated . I know when I was 16 I was only concerned with getting my hands up a blouse or down a girls pants ............... never had thoughts of killing someone ! Next issue to look at is how he put his hands on that pistol , my " guess " is it was laying around the house vs. locked up in a safe . If that is the case then I doubt any law is going to stop or deter a criminal . RIP to the victims and their families .

In the circle of events from Biosurfer1, I have a question...what exactly would you have Congress do about the next school shooting, and where will that be ?

It's a shame that we still haven't figured out that we need to limit points of entry and have metal detection devices installed at those points of entry. Yeah it sucks to have to do something like this but it's the reality we face today. Protect our kids just like we protect our members of congress, and our courthouses.

This kid does not seem to be anyone almost everyone could be. The thing to be done is a political third rail. And so the debates rightly continue.

That this country has become such a bunch of d-bags unwilling admit that they might be wrong (or at least not absolutist...listen for how many times you here someone say “absolutely” or something close in a day) and convinced of their arrogance is a big issue. A LOT of problems stem from that mind set alone.

Everyone should be ashamed of the issue. Until everyone is, round and round it goes.

Stop the incessant media coverage of these shootings. Stop giving hours and days of recognition to the shooter.

With all the shooters in these past events, including the Boston bombing, the media has basically turned these people into celebrities and folk heros.

Yup. I’m baffled that this isn’t more of a conversation.

This is a video made by my Department regarding active shooters. It contains a great deal of information for the "average Joe or Jane." Please watch it with your kids and loved ones.

My tactical unit conducts these exercises throughout the County and we make it as real as possible.

If you have any one-on-one questions, send me a direct message.

Stay safe, David

They had no metal detectors at the school. Hugh, I don't know if you've seen any pictures of the new Castaic High School (Opened this fall semester) but it looks like a prison. Tall wrought iron fences and gates w/ spikes, concrete walls with no windows, etc.

Seems that will be the new architectural standard for new schools being built.

He did it outside before entering the school building, from what I understand. How would a metal detector work at a HS where hundreds of people are arriving at exactly the same time for an 8am class wearing belt buckles and pockets full of change?

Banning press coverage of major crimes is not going to happen. What other suggestions do you have, maybe something realistic?

I'd like to know why the authorities in charge kept saying the shooter was still at large when they knew he was one of the injured kids in the quad area?
It became telling when the sheriff at a later news conference, admitted that they had the shooter and were trying to protect his location (at the time the local hospital) and keep it a secret to help protect him.
Seems to me, all the cops responding, the buses being loaded with kids, the worried parents could have been alleviated before 9AM in the morning. Instead, we got TV coverage all morning long, all the time thinking or being told the shooter had yet to be taken down.
I think the authorities really 'played' the media on this one.

Condolences to the parents that lost kids, that is heartbreaking to me.

You don't have to ban it, just influence the media to realize something is good for the country.

However, a lot of media sells fear.

The good of the country is a conflict of interest vs selling fear.

One way to stop this is to ban random searches. The LAUSD teacher's union fought to stop this unjust act to our poor students and they won. I think this was last year. Dumb parents and teachers voted heavily for it. Hey, don't do or bring drugs or a weapon to school but we wouldn't search for it. Just what the hell are they thinking?

I know, I know, the shooting happened before school started but the next one may occur during school time and if they can get one step closer to getting rid of a weapon that may be used to kill others, why not?
