I'd have to point out that not ALL RETAIL NEW CAR DEALERS operate this way. We've always poked fun at shops that operate like this. "The difference between a mechanic and a technician." I tell my customers all the time that I'm not going to guess with THEIR money. If I can't duplicate the noise I'm not going to start hanging parts on unless I KNOW they have failed, and sometimes you just have to start with what you KNOW has failed and proceed from there.

I've been in new car dealership service for 11 years including (officially) managing a service department for three.
