Hoverboards

Flatbutt III would go nutz to have one for Christmas but my research reveals that most of them suck.

Any experience with them here? Any recos?

TIA

Yikes that's a lot of money. Maybe I'll get him some skates instead.

Yep, I'm seeing a lot of them around my neighborhood as well.

My son got a hoverboard last Xmas an he loved it. It was a Razor brand, which you pay a premium for — mostly because they sell spare parts and speak English and may actually warranty it for some short period — but they’re all more or less the same devices. The differences tend to be the battery and wheel size. I saw them (non-Razor brand) on sale over Black Friday for ~$100, which was less than half what I spent for a nearly identical hoverboard. In retrospect, I should have probably just bought the best rated one on Amazon (or local Walmart) and saved some money.

My son subsequently bought a “go-kart” attachment that fit on top of the hoverboard and he seemed to like that combo even more — it’s basically a seat with a wheel that fits on top of the hoverboard and uses a right an left hand levers to accelerate/brake/turn/etc. If you search hoverboard go-kart you’ll find what I’m talking about. I got on it once or twice and it was pretty fun and surprisingly fast.

A few cautions:

Safety first: Make sure the kids wear a helmet (at a minimum). Wrist guards and elbow/knee pads are highly recommended. Wipeouts are assured given enough time. There will be blood. And don’t assume the neighborhood kids will know how to ride one, or wear safety gear. Keep them far away from your Porsche — they will inevitably lose control in that direction. And keep the adults off them, it’s really easy to wipe out / end up in the ER.

Additional tip: Resist the urge to let kids hoverboard in the house. My baseboards are pocked with hits suffered in first week of ownership (no one wants to hoverboard in the cold outside, right?). The cost of repainting the baseboards will vastly exceed the cost of the hoverboard...

Life expectancy (of the hoverboard, not the child) — Probably about a year of regular use. My son’s is still working, but I have to imagine it’s on borrowed time — it looks really rough. But it’s been ridden hard, particularly with the cart attachment, which allowed him to do drifts and wheelies. When it dies, we’re not replacing it — on to something else...

Buy him some really cheap goalie equipment. He'll get hurt just as much.

I tried one 3 years ago in Thailand on my epic journey to rescue my father.

I felt like a rockstar for nearly 3 seconds before feeling like a terrified rockstar with no sense of balance. My hover boarding career lasted no more than 10 seconds.

On another note, that video for the one wheel board doesn’t really scream out to my generation... I felt old after watching that.
