$170K-300K for a brand new Mustang?
I keeps seeing ads on the forum for brand new licensed replicas of the 1960's Mustangs, but using modern engines. The Convertible 1966 starts around $170k with around 350 hp.
Would you pay for this much for a "modern" Replica?

Seems to be all the rage, but I question how many people are still of car buying/driving age that dreamed about a 1960s Mustang? They’d probably be better off doing a restomod Fox body 5.0 instead.

I really like the idea of a 67-68 fastback. My first car was a 67 coupe, typical POS rustang. When I saw the new bodies I immediately thought yes! Modern drivetrain, decent suspension... then I saw the price. I'm just in a different bracket, no chance. Pretty cool concept, just not for folks like me. Would love to drive one.

Not all that many years ago, assuming I could justify the spending, I'd have gone for something like that.
But age does bring on a different thinking process. I'm 76 now, still love looking at and reading about various cars, but the urge to actually possess is pretty much gone. Sigh...just more "stuff" to worry about taking care of. Jay Leno has the ideal set-up with his money. Have the cars, but also have a crew to care for them and a well equipped shop to keep them in.

If I had stupid money? Yes.
But much of the allure for some to those vintage years is the tin rattle barely held together by seals, the distinct typewriter hum echoing throughout, the lightweight tossability, and the feedback which sources from all the above. It's not legally possible anymore to make the same car with crumple-zones, ABS/TPS, plus modern emissions controls. The look is still phenomenal though. New car designs tend to follow the same patterns. |

Interesting point. How much of what we like is the memory vs the actual thing? 67 mustang sounds good until it gets 12mph, have horrible steering, wallows around corners or rides so hard you can stand more then 30min at a time. Where is the bluetooth!? Compared to a modern car with all the bells and whistles yet none of the character/memories we were looking for. We each make that choice.

There are soooo many options when that much money enters the discussion. I could get my head around a great early mustang at $50k. Multiplying that by whole numbers is absurd.

I had the GT version of that, in Burgundy. A 1985 with the 5.0 and the Holly 4 bbl. Lower top HP but higher Torque. I could beat the later F.I. GTs off the line and 0-60. But they had a higher top speed.

I tried to get my girlfriend in college to get an '89 5.0 LX. It was almost identical to my 85 GT in looks. She ended up with a Chevy Spectrum, which was a re-badged Isuzu I-Mark. Her mother made her buy an "American" car. And they were "Chevy" people.
I had the 5 speed manual. I bought it used in 1987 for about $8500.

Part of me thinks it would be fun to get a Fox body LX 5.0, but they can be hard to find in unmolested form.

I wonder if $300k would get something like this accomplished or if you have to own a shop with bleeding edge people and contacts.

With $300k surely you could build your own and have a stack of money left over.
What I mean by "build your own" is source a base car and have it professionally rebuilt to your spec.
