How many of us have owned a vintage VW?
The current Samba thread reminded me how almost all of us seem to have had at least one old air-cooled VW. So I thought I'd find out just how many.

I had 3, Blackie, Little Red and Old Whitey. Their engines seemed to last about 100,000 miles, then, bang, followed by silence.

1959 and 1966 Beetles and a 1968 Bus.
The 1966 I drove across the country three times. Different world.

My dad had several when he was a teen. My parents had one that I drove one summer when I visited out of college.
The first car that my parents purchased for me was a '65 Chevy Impala 2 dr, 350 2bbl, 4 spd. After that I mostly had a bunch of economy cars for many years.

I put a bunch of miles on my nephew 's squareback in the early 70's. It had the clutchless gear box and was the slowest car I had ever driven. We once timed it to 60 MPH. It was about twenty seconds.
Best Les

'68 with the autostick transmission. That thing was a blast to drive, dirt cheap and reliable........
I regretted selling it and still do, 45 years later. And right, It WAS NOT vintage at the time! |

My 1st car was a VW bus, came loaded with spare VW parts as well as a garage loaded with VW stuff. So guess you can blame my over active parts fetish on that. Bought it from an older gentleman who live in the neighborhood.

Lots of beetles, one Ghia, one notchback and one bus. One beetle was a '56 oval and I put a 912 motor in it. Probably built 20 VW motors...used to be able to do it complete for less than $100 including pistons and cylinders! The good old days.
