It is just like cars, even Porsches, they just get bigger every few years.

Is the pier built to load/unload from both sides? Or does the second ship have to wait his turn?
The Lefkes ship looks huge. Empty?

Both sides at once, because we just did a re dredging on what we call the east side where
the "laker" just off loaded a large amount of gravel.

So we can now work both sides at once. The "Lefkes" is large at 590 ft., but the laker"Atlantic Huron" is well over seven hundred ft. The Lefkes looks larger because it only has 6,000 mt on board. Look at the next picture and you can just see the bow
of the red ship above the pier building.

The Pilots of ships like these must have nerves of steel.
I'm sure they don't stop or turn 'on a dime'

One of the anxious moments I had in my Naval career was as the OOD on what the Navy calls "Sea and Anchor Detail".

I was bringing the USS La Salle (AGF-3) into port at Mina Sulman in Bahrain. There was a Harbor Pilot on Deck, as well as all the other folks.

Holy smokes. Thank god the XO (great guy) took pity on me and helped.

Never has something so slow seemed so fast. I kid you not.

Love these threads.

We have a big ship here too. Unfortunately, it's about 500' off the edge of our Island,

I do find this stuff fascinating. Particularly in places that are "sort of on the edge" and experience pretty extreme weather, like your neck of world.

Just another post to say thanks for sharing.
