Vettel I am sure is set financially for the rest of his life . My guess is he takes some time off to enjoy life after the 2020 season . Then he will hit a point where either the wife/kids are driving him nuts or the competitive juices start boiling . He can do sports car racing or maybe Formula E . He will find a drive if he wants one .

sammyg2 05-15-2020 09:55 AM

LOL wouldn't that be cool if Vettel eventually won the indy 500?

stealthn 05-15-2020 04:21 PM

Sky sports is doing such a great job during these times.

I really enjoyed hearing this inside scoop and watching this all the way to the end!

That is very unfortunate.

I hope those let go can find suitable employment.

sammyg2 05-29-2020 06:16 AM

Lots of stuff going on.

Williams is for sale. Toast.

Toto is out next year as Merc team manager

Merc is rumored to be selling out (part of) the team to wolff and stroll in exchange for shares of aston martin.
I suspect it's all over but the crying.

On the lighter side, Kimi got a cool present from Ferrari

Yes on Kimi and Williams, but no on Toto per mercedes lastest release (translation by me, might use other words if you find it in english)..

Wolff is indeed a shareholder in Aston Martin (42 million euros) - 0,95% of the capital. He also owns 30% of the mercedes F1 team - the guy is not poor ;-)

Mercedes said: « rumors about us leaving F1 are unfounded and irresponsible" - " The sport just took good measures to face the consequences of Covid 19 and ensure its long term stability and future" - "Our intention is clear: to continue racing in Formula 1 as a factory team and to do so with our partner and team principal Toto Wolff ».

Make of that what you will. It is F1 after all ;-)

GH85Carrera 05-29-2020 10:22 AM

I am just guessing that Toto Wolff made most of his money as compensation from Mercedes. It is almost funny how much he sounds like Arnold Schwarzenegger. Not too surprising as he is a big man from Austria. No doubt he is a very smart and talented man.

Wolff to step down as Mercedes team boss – reports
Date published: May 29 2020

Never mind what’s going on with the drivers, it looks as if Toto Wolff won’t be Mercedes team boss come 2021 but that doesn’t mean he is leaving the team.

According to F1-Insider.com, ‘team boss Toto Wolff will resign from his operational role at the head of the factory team at the end of his contract and switch to the team’s supervisory board’.

Wolff, who joined Mercedes in 2013 and played an integral role in the team’s current run of six championship doubles, owns 30 percent of the Mercedes Formula 1 team, the other 70 belonging to Daimler.

The Austrian recently alluded to a change.

“It is not just about whether I am now extending my contract as team manager, but we are also discussing what we are going to do with this joint company,” he told ORF.

Wolff’s decision not to continue as team boss could be just the first part of a major shake-up that would also involve Lawrence Stroll and Aston Martin.

At present Stroll owns 25 percent of Aston Martin and, as of next season, his Racing Point team will be rebranded under the British carmaker’s moniker.

‘An exchange transaction could come into play’, said F1-Insider, ‘so that Daimler, which previously owned five percent of the traditional English brand, can increase its stake in Aston Martin.

‘The idea that is being discussed behind the scenes: Daimler receives Stroll’s Aston Martin shares in return for shares in the Formula 1 team. This means: Stroll and Wolff will be the majority owners of the F1 team.’

This would not only help Mercedes exit F1 as a majority owner of the team but would also lessen the financial burden that has taken its toll on all car manufacturers around the globe.

It is unclear what would happen to Stroll’s Racing Point team, which could possibly become a B-team to his Mercedes outfit.

Daimler has denied wanting to withdraw from F1.

A spokesman told Motorsport-Total.com: “Speculations regarding a possible withdrawal from Formula 1 remain unfounded and irresponsible.

“Sport has taken the right measures to address the consequences of the COVID 19 pandemic and future financial sustainability.”

His 30% ownership of the team doesn't hurt either. Interesting that now at the end, he finally refers to the team as "this joint company".

Contrary to all of the doom and gloom apocalyptic news headlines, you have to think that the new F1 business model is starting to make more sense, as in the Pre-JeanTodt days. The Piranha Club used to actually make money. Even Eddie Jordan could somehow make things work for a time. As in those days, the costs will be brought down to a level within reach of sponsorship support.

IF Williams is able to somehow find bridge capital, then they will survive. It seems that McLaren will have to downsize to survive, as well as find around 200M to stay afloat until either sponsorship money arrives, or car production resumes. I think they can do it. Even the British government has an interest in making sure that McLaren do not vanish.

On The Other Hand:
The prize money from racing will be non-existent if there is no spectators, correct? Or are they divvying up TV rights money?

The glam parties will go away. The hospitality 'motorhome' palaces will go away. No more grid girls. And the Jean Todt experiment of selling Tech to environmentalists (dumb idea) and tech nerds (even dumber idea) is over. It was too expensive and there is no market for that.

What no one realizes about Bernie E, is that he is the world's greatest salesman. He found a niche, realized that there was a market among the world's elite wealthy for a travelling global party. The car races were sort of the backdrop. The real objective was the party. He spoke about this, saying that people who buy Rolexes are his customer, not some pimply-faced teenager who rides the bus and walks around with earbuds stuck in his head. The vocal masses do not understand this, as they do not think about the big picture. Liberty Media totally missed this point too. The company is not run by people who have built or run an empire. When they kicked the grid girls to the curb, opened the paddock to the hoi polloi with their selfie sticks and giant foam #1 fingers and face paint, it was over.

Now the F1 model is to make the races more like American football games, with pitched on track battles, Nascar TV style graphics, music like American NFL or boxing TV broadcasts, etc. Is there a market among the unwashed masses for European tech battles set in a hyper political fishbowl? I don't think so, but the question is intriguing nonetheless.

Confirmed! 1st Race is Austria on 5 July

Iciclehead 06-02-2020 04:28 PM

I maintain my position....is F1 still a thing? Does anyone care? Aren't we supposed to loath the burning of hydrocarbons in the arms of Gaia and embrace the electric slot cars that are the wave of the future?

money in F-1 is nothing like american racing
the race winner gets NO money just points and a plate or cup
ticket money goes to pay the fee for the race NOT to the team or drivers
most tracks get gov funds to cover the difference in the tickets sales vs the race fees
most tracks do not sell inc texas enuff tickets to cover the fees
the only funds to the teams is the TV money from the points based end of year ranking paid out over the next racing year from the sport

btw the WDC gets nothing but a tytle [he does mostly get paid more by the team next year but not always [D HILL] ]

You may not like Hamilton or Mercedes or the color blue but you have to have respect for this team for what they have been able to do and how they do it.

World Championships, Constructor titles, reliable & fast cars and on top of that they take the time to create honest vids like these and their uber candid PitWall series. In these days of media spin-cycles, obfuscation instead of transparency and deflecting blame, Mercedes is doing it 'right' in my mind. Without a doubt the pressure to perform in the team must be incredibly high but with an obvious common goal in mind and a management structure clearly aligned with the goal I imagine it is a rewarding experience. Definitely the bar has been raised and re-set.

That's a blue ? I always saw it as a green... maybe we can start an internet craziness "Is this car blue or green?" ;-)

Deschodt 06-19-2020 09:23 AM

Sad news, Alex Zanardi had a real bad accident on his bike (hitting a truck) and his life is in danger.. Talk about rotten luck for that guy... Wishing him the best, he's a fantastic guy..

Deschodt 07-02-2020 02:46 PM

Predictions for this w/e?
Mercedes obviously in front, then one redbull (max) and one Force india (whatever sport pesa aston martin, I dunno, the pink car of Sergio Perez) . Ferrari behind those 4, not on pace.
Then during the race the doodad steering breaks on one of the Mercedes and gets banned...

stealthn 07-03-2020 04:33 PM

Interesting stuff so far...

According to TV Racer qualifying starts at 8:55 AM eastern time on ESPN .

rfuerst911sc 07-04-2020 05:49 AM

Wow is Ferrari off the pace ! So is Alfa ......... who would have thought Stroll would be faster than both red cars ????? It may be an interesting season

bkreigsr 07-04-2020 10:07 AM

What's the deal with last year's Ferrari lump ?
What was illegal about it ?
When the case is ruled upon, will they be back in the running ?
...not used to seeing the red cars not make it into Q3.

Bill K

rusnak 07-04-2020 12:57 PM

McLaren will out-develop, out-strategize, and out-setup the pink cars, and will stomp Team Stroll into submission by mid-season.

CMDR Perry 07-05-2020 07:16 AM

That was the best F1 race in many years, retirements are good for shaking things up. Lots of excitement in the last 6 laps. DP

rfuerst911sc 07-05-2020 08:09 AM

I found the 2nd half of the race very entertaining . Felt bad for Albon and a great run by Norris . Kimi's exit stage left was interesting  . Haas was a disappointment . And WTF was Vettel thinking ???

astrochex 07-05-2020 11:35 AM

And talk about LeClerc making lemonade out of lemons.

Clean driving in F1 is the exception it seems.

David 07-06-2020 05:10 AM

Albon seems to be the real deal. His passes are some of the best F1 entertainment there is. Now if Hamilton can quit running into him, he'll start getting some podium finishes.

Overall, there's a lot of young talent out there that isn't afraid to go wheel to wheel with anyone which is good news for F1.

URY914 07-06-2020 07:01 AM

Surprised (but happy) that they assessed a penalty on Hamilton.

It sure was an entertaining last few laps.

GH85Carrera 07-06-2020 07:28 AM

For the first time in a long time the British driver in the points lead is Not Hamilton. That will not last.

The penalty was about the right severity both before and during the race. The yellow flag was out for a reason, and even if the cloud of dust made it hard to see, his dash lights up with a yellow light, and the cloud of dust was a good indication that someone was off track.

The race incident was his fault. He was passed, and should have yielded which I understand is really hard for any driver, but he should have left a car width there. He failed to do so.

In the end, he drove a way better race than Vettle, he seems intent on screwing up, and making Ferrari feel good about the decision to not renew his contract.

livi 07-06-2020 09:54 AM

And although he lost a wheel, Kimi stood up. Along with another handful of drivers. Good for them. They are there to drive. Not to make political statements. Basta.

rfuerst911sc 07-06-2020 11:38 AM

In Zanardi news he had a 5 hour surgery today to put his face back together 😟 . Man this guy and his family have been through a lot . Hoping for the best but the brain damage may be too severe . So sad .

Deschodt 07-06-2020 11:56 AM

It's pretty obvious that Ferrari did something clever but borderline illegal last year with the motor, and the secret agreement with the FIA was "OK, we won't punish you but you need to stop and we won't talk about it"... The Ferrari engine teams are the only ones slower in a straight line than last year ! .7 sec per lap on straights ? Please... Haas is nowhere now, same with alfa, "coincidentally" all 3 Ferrari engine teams were the only ones slower than the past year...

breaking : Ferrari will bring a bunch of upgrades planned for hungary early.... “This is in the hope of bringing forward to next weekend the introduction of the aerodynamic package scheduled for the Hungarian Grand Prix – or, at least, some of its components." they cannot touch the engine this year, limited tokens, what have you.... Not gonna be a great season for them unless they pull off an aero miracle. Go McLaren !

During the race they said the adjustable front toe was used just to get heat in the front tires during warm up laps?
It's saves the rear tires because of less weaving to warm the fronts?
Do F1 front tires warm that much slower than the rears?

On my GT-1 race cars with big rear tires I feel the rears are last to get up to temp.
