Looks like they were circling over Glendale for about 10 minutes before deciding to go for it.

https://www.adelaidenow.com.au/news/world/watch-video-shows-path-of-helicopter-before-crash-that-killed-kobe-bryant/video/101d90edb3137d3d88045c3534adcb21

I would imagine they were stopped over Glendale for weather and were waiting for it to clear up. Maybe there was a time when it got better or they may have lost their patience?

Still it sounds like that helicopter can fly on instruments and the pilot would be certified to so so? Maybe it is a series of smaller failures that added up to a catastrophe.

They stopped because air traffic control asked them to, to allow for traffic into and out of the airport that they were intending to cross. Around 15 minutes, I think.

That helicopter can fly IFR but they were flying VFR.

It was pea soup fog here in SoCal that morning and LEO helicopters were grounded due to flight conditions. I'm not sure why they decided to go for it but if a pilot becomes disoriented at low altitude, bad things can happen quickly. This pilot was IFR rated but chose to fly SVFR instead.

Good info here includes report flying too low at 184 mph:

He had SVFR clearance, no clearance to fly through the fog.

Good points.

However any person who decides at age 5 to be the best in the world at something and then accomplishes it deserves some respect, no?

In addition, though Kobe admitted to adultery with the accuser, the facts of the case demonstrated serious and significant issues with the alleged crime and ultimately there was no criminal conviction.

In the spirit of full disclosure, until he died I didn’t know much more than he was a good basketball player and allot of people loved him. He was In his mid-40’s or whatever and was estimated to be worth $500m and was just beginning to embark on several entrepreneurial and philanthropic endeavors which, considering his intellect and going by past accomplishments, were likely to be huge successes.

Not saying it was a factor here, but I imagine that judgement can sometimes be affected by the pressures and/or demands of high-profile clients.

RIP to all.

I am sure there is one female in Vail that isn’t too upset.

Karmas a *****, I am sorry for the other folks on the ill fated flight. There is an orphaned son and daughter of the baseball coach, wife and daughter that were also on the flight.

My thoughts as well. Very common, unfortunately.

Now is not the time to litigate how Kobe lived his life. Nine people lost their lives in a very horrible way and all that we should be thinking about is the loss they left behind and the struggle that their families and friends will be burdened with from here on out.

RIP, Everyone that perished that day.

This guy posted this yesterday. It was before much was known but he usually has some very good insight on these things. He believes the pilot lost visual and tried to turn around.

It is sad when someone unexpectedly loses their life at an early age. It is also understandable that many will remember what a great athlete Kobe was.
That said, he was not a hero nor a victim. He was a very rich retired basketball player. How many military, police, fire people lost their lives the same day. They deserve more honor and tears for making the ultimate sacrifice for the good of others. Kobe went for a ride in bad conditions. No honor there. Just sad for those that lost friends and family.

Another star. Similar circumstances. Overweight in that one.

Sad to hear, but I’m more concerned with your average Joe working every day to get ahead. Or those who put it on the line every day in the military.

The girl who didn't realize that when you file police charges, they need evidence? The medical exam turned up several other semen samples in her vag. She refused to testify as the criminal case was falling apart, and instead she decided to pursue a civil case. Turns out she settled for money, big surprise there, as she torpedoed the criminal case. So unless you were there, how can you know what the truth is? I think we can admit that we don't know all of the facts, whether that be in Kobe's favor or against.

In other news, the price of tea in China is way down.

Exactly.
Hey wait, what's that crack about "average Joe"? :)
