I tip for takeout, because I want them to remember me as a regular, and because tips are part of people's wages. Dennis pretty much said it all. A lot of the places go under if the service or food isn't good. I want the places I like to do well and that extends to the staff. The pricing of food is somewhat based on the low wages of the help, so tipping help is part of the cost.

These are people in my community. I want them to do well.

The only takeout I generally get is from a local Chinese place. They know me well and I tip about 10% when I’m picking up an order.

Maybe some Canadians do not tip but most people I know tip based on service and quality of food.
Typically 20% for sit down meals, 15% for pub service.
Take out, I will throw a buck or two into the jar.

If servers were paid a living wage it wouldn't be necessary.

I tip the waitress at a buffet a small amount ($1 or 2$), a good waitress at a full service restruant 20-25%, but no tip to a take out joint. We live out in the stix, so no delivery at our place.

I leave a 10% tip for small, local, mom & pop places I go to if I get a takeout order. If I get a takeout order at a chain (which is very seldom), I don't leave anything. We occasionally go to an Italian/pizza place where we order at a counter, but there are young people who bring the order, utensils, & bring extras if you want. I leave 10% for them at the table.

Usually leave 10% as well as I appreciate the workers effort especially in restaurants I frequent. +1 for the European system and Japanese.

There are many variables for me. I sure don't tip at a fast food place to order the food, stand there, and get it and eat it there type of place. Even if I do get it to go and I leave.

For a pizza pickup, same thing. I just pay for it, and go. If it is a nice place, and to go is only a small part of the business, it is usually a lot of work to get things set up to go, so I give a few bucks tip.

At Sonic, they have a drive thru that I don't tip at, but for the car hop delivery to my car I give them a buck. I almost never go to the drive thru.

There is an Asian food place nearby that has only two tables and seats for 4 at each. Almost no one eats there, it is almost all to go. I might tip them a buck if it is a big order. They really don't want me eating there.

The vast majority of the time, we eat at the restaurant.

Ditto, and same on tax... In most of Europe the price you see on the tag includes tax. No 7-9-10% surprise at the cash register... All of it feels like bait and switch really...

I really don't see how anyone can live on sub $3 +tips...
Depends where in Canada. Growing up in the prairies, my farmer uncles didn't tip. One time we were all out for lunch (I was a wee kid) and someone paid the bill and left a tip. One of my ucles swiped the tip and handed it to my kid brother with a wink.

Now that I'm "all grown up" and living in the Vancouver area, tipping is 15-20% generally. 10% if service not very good.
Take out: like Seahawk, if I order there somewhat regularly; They remember you.

Take out rarely, unless it's a large phone in order and they have to do running around grabbing napkins condiments.
I usually tip 15-20 percent in a restaurant depending on service. We went for dinner last night and got to talking with the server about the service industry and tipping. This was after we paid. She told us she has to kickback 7% of sales that goes into a pool for non tip employees. If she gets no tip she still has to cough up the dough.
I get the bad rap of Canadians not tipping. I was in Florida over the holidays and went to a Florida Panther game. They were playing the Montreal Canadiens. The arena had more Canadien fans than Florida fans. Any way 2 Canadien fans from Quebec that were in front of us ordered 2 beers from a vendor. The beer was $28, they waited for their $2 change
