turbo tax??

Do you use the online edition or download the program. Are there any benefits of one vs the other, just curious.

Is one more secure than the other?

Thanks

Our taxes are fairly complicated with the farm, business ownership out of State, consulting, investments, etc...plus my wife does her Mother's that also has Estate complexities.

So, I go buy the CD for Business and we load on two computers...I do ours, she does her Mother's and then we compare.

I honestly love doing taxes. I do have professional back-up if I have issues.

I have no idea concerning security - I file paper copies only since I am always early and, as I said, I buy the CD.

My taxes are a little complicated, I use the online turbo tax version and it's handled anything I've thrown at it.

I tried using H&R block's software a couple years ago and it was a joke.

Ive been doing Turbo on line for about 10 years. No problems. Last time I went to a pro I was not thrilled with the service I got.

Turbo tax CD since 1994. I've used it when selling 2 rental homes and one primary residence. Never had an audit in my life......

I gave up doing my own taxes a few years ago when I went into business for myself. There are a ton of rules and illogical traps in the federal tax laws. Only the US government would divide the 12 months of the year into quarters and NOT come up with 3 months long quarters. Since when can a quarter of 12 month year vary from 2 - 3 or 4 month long periods?

Now I just use the same CPA that does the tax prep for my LLC and then tells me how much to pay after making tax payments all year.

I used Turbo tax for many years, going back to the 1980s when in came on floppy disks.

Same here: we have a CPA for the business since it is an S Corp, we would be a fool not to, but I knit the rest of the stuff together because I enjoy the process.

I still have the old Floppies and CD's since they take up zero room...and I know I am not responsible and can't be audited after a certain time period, but I like knowing they are there.

Party at my house!

Same here. Online for at least 5 years, maybe longer, CD for 10 years prior.

Although mine are very simple, I did have one year with a more complex situation I wasn’t entirely comfortable with so I went to a CPA who came up with the same result.

As far as security, it’s something I think about every year but I proceed under the presumption that a company who’s sole existence relies on secure transactions will provide sufficient safeguards.

It’s certainly no less secure than your local CPA who has a cleaning service come through the office every week.

I buy my copy from Costco each year. I do our returns, the MILs, and both kids' returns.

The only advantage to the CD version is you don't have personal information being stored in the "cloud" during the next hack.

With so much personal info out there already, not sure how much of a difference it makes at this point, but that is a difference.

I've been using the CD since 1997 (2019 should be arriving from Amazon tomorrow). My mom, and I think at least one of the kids does it online and have no problems. Considering the nature of the transaction and the fact that the software interfaces with the IRS, Intuit should have top notch security either way.

I pay a cpa to do my taxes, but that is no guarantee. The guy I had been with for 25 years really effed up in 2017. He got real pissy about his screwup and I had to straighten it out myself. Got my liability reduced from $44,000 to ZERO without his help.

I Fought the Law and ...

Turbo Tax online this year, lots of little dings. Last year used HR Block online- IIRC cost slightly less.

If you go to a pro, all they're gonna do is input it all for ya.

I buy the CD at Costco. Haven't tried the online version. I prefer to know where my data is stored...

Sorry, Randy, but you're sorely mistaken if you think tax professionals are just data entry clerks.

If that’s all your cpa does you need another cpa.
