Trying to figure out how a political campaign tied my number to my daughter??

Not political!! let's not go there.
I received a text from a political campaign addressed to my college age daughter. I'm trying to figure out how they tied my number to her. The only thing I can come up with is that Intuit/Turbo Tax sold my information to a political campaign or they somehow got it from me filing her tax return for her from the IRS? I can't think of any other way they'd be able to tie my personal cell phone to my daughter. The weird thing is, my wife got a text from the same campaign a few weeks ago but her number wasn't used when filing my daughter's taxes.
So who sold my info??

I've gotten 3 text msgs for different campaigns (Bernie twice and the third someone else) that were address to other names. Did they use her full name? It could just be a coincidence.

Location services. Have you seen her lately, been in the same place?

In 2001 I developed a system that could track you from the time you clicked on, say a banner or email newsletter link, to your registration, and then track your click stream from there. It was a little before its time.

Data mining and analytics are now in their teenage years of development. Facebook, web site registration (for anything) and smart phones make it easier than ever for anyone to target you, your family, co-workers and neighbors. Someday, if you buy the wrong thing or vote the wrong way, your wife, boss and your dog will all get text messages asking them to set you on the right path. It's probably happening now.

Dystopia and Idiocracy are already upon us. That's the net net.

Both used her first name and spelled it correctly. Both from team Bernie fwiw.

Public college. This is what has me wondering how they got my cell phone number connected to my daughter.

Nah. He's too smaht for all that. He's on to me. Ever since we had to start giving him thyroid medication he's been very selective about what treats, if any, he'll eat. We used to put the pill in a piece of cheese and he'd eat that. Then he figured out the pill was in there so he separated the pill from the cheese in his mouth and spit the pill out. We switched to hotdogs with the same results. Now I swear he has a royal food tester to sample his food before he eats it. His name is Peanut. He's the cat the kids keep down the basement.

You guys have no idea how public your information is. A local cop car scans and reads license plate numbers continuously, and gives a readout of any one who has an outstanding warrant, their names and addresses, phone number, etc. And their phones have software that can give them contact information of relatives, spouses, and even people who you are just dating and have not married. I know this because we are very cop friendly, and they've shown me what they can do on the phone, and in the police cruiser. One cop ran half a dozen plates from his rear facing camera while parked in front of my building. This is not just limited to government use. Private companies can license public software to individuals that give them access to government records. I was just at a title company yesterday, and they were running backround checks on people and companies for a fee. There are even software analytic programs used by the DOD that make 3-dimensional models showing connections between people, events, and places that are separated by several degrees. Like a super Maltego program on steroids.
The takeaway is that almost no private information is private.

I'm not saying or even expecting that my number is private. I have it all over the internet. It's the number I use for my business. I'm trying to figure out why my number got attributed to my daughter's name. I'd be fine if the text was addressed to "Nick". But they used my daughters name in the text asking who she planned to support. Her name has several different spellings but they hit the nail on the head in the text to me and to my wife a few days ago so it wasn't luck.

VOTING RECORDS

Those seeking office have access to voting records. Has everyone tied to an address including their phones.

I'm beginning to think a tinfoil hat is not enough. We need full tinfoil suits.

Nick - I moved 2 years ago and occasionally I get mail with my brother's name on it. I get mail for my ex wife at my new address, we divorced in 1997 and I've moved twice since then. I don't know how they do it.

everyone gets bent out of shape over the GOV tracking you looking for threats, the BIG threat is our own phones and computers and EVERYONE ELSE tracking us. even this site does it.
nearly every program we use or web site we visit tracks us and stores our information.
install some app on your phone or computer. we have NO IDEA what information they are sending to who knows where about us.
I have said for years now there needs to be a law that makes every software designers tell us everything they are monitoring about us. yes, some do, but its the ones that are doing it secretly that we need to worry about.

tell me, why does harbor freight need my phone number when I buy gloves.
take grocery stores, they almost force you to one of their "cards" that gives you discounts but why, just so they can track you.

we use to joke about it YEARS ago that some day there will be a chip in your forehead that gets scanned, no more credit cards.

My mother died over 10 years ago. I still on occasion, get mail addressed to to her. She never lived here, but she did buy things from catalogs and have them shipped here for gifts. She sure has not ordered anything in over a decade, but her name is on some list tied to this address. I just toss it in the recycle bin.

My dad died 7 years ago, and he would be 90 if he were still alive. I still get crap from retirement homes addressed to him. He too never lived here, but I did have his mailing address changed to mine when he died for the few items that were coming about his estate.

I presume the old address information does not get cleaned out or verified very often. Once it goes in, it is "in the system" forever.
