Spring garden.... What are you planting?

What are you guys planting for spring? I have a 5 acre plot cleared, fenced and set up for drip irrigation. I won't plant the whole field, but a half acre and a few rows. I'm looking at heirloom veggies. No corn though. What are you guys planting?

Tomatoes is the plan. Have to double check HOA rules to see how I may be offending the powers that be.

While the fence around the garden is not totally completed, it is enough to keep the deer out.
Until now, anything planted turned into deer food instead of people food.

Around here, lots of people enclose their gardens sides, top, & underneath with metal mesh. That's too much effort to get a few veges for me.

Nothing but plants that flower for the bees and milkweed for the monarch butterflies. No human food planting. We can go to the farmer's market and buy from them, home grown quality foods. Most of the vendors sell what they produced.

We always have lots of bees and have had several caterpillars cocoon and turn into butterflies.

Same as always, peas, carrots, lettuce, I'll try pickle cuqs again (didn't come up last year), garlic, onions. I went to plant Asparagus but read it takes 7 years...that can't be right.

Cauliflower, it's funny mine came up two years ago and once it got to looking like small cauliflower I said I would wait another month only to see the white part actually does turn into flowers

Several varieties of peppers (bell, jalapeno, poblano), several varieties of tomatoes, squash and zucchini. Already have blueberryand blackberry plants from several years back - as well as 2 fig trees. Might even plant some sweet potatoes - have had good luck with them in the past.

Getting set up to plant tomatoes and peppers. I raked the straw off of the strawberries on March 8 - hope it's not too soon. I'll be planting snow peas in a week or two.

Size 11 shoes. Yes - that one in particular is rather large! The shovel blade is barely visible on the right of the photo as another comparison.

I put in 1800 garlic plants last fall... now I need to start a new garden someplace else... I’ll go raised bed again and do a 1/3 manure (3 years old) and 2/3 clean loam mix rototilled together. Normally we grow potatoes, beets, lettuce, carrots, pumpkins, and zucchini. Corn has been hit and miss but mostly miss.

Use a turning fork to fork in about 1/4 compost. Dig out and remove what is there if there isn't room for it. Here's a crappy video showing a guy using one.

I've been focusing more on bees and butterflies the past three years. In fact my garden birthed at least five monarchs last year. Of course there will be tomatoes, few things taste better than a sun warmed tomato straight off of the vine.

I think my garage birthed around 100 monarchs. My wife and S.I.L gather eggs and worms from milkweed, bring them in the garage and then raise the little suckers. They then tag them and release them.
It's unbelievable to me how much those little suckers eat and poop!!

You have no idea! As the season goes on, I have to go out in search of more milkweed because they've eaten all the leaves from the plants nearby. I had to tell my dad to stop mowing a property about 2 miles away so I could go there to collect milkweed leaves for those little suckers. I have no idea how I got suckered into this hobby by my wife... but it happened.

We had one large milkweed plant stripped to the stems. We just moved the caterpillars to other plants with leaves. Right now my wife has several milkweed plants growing from seeds in our guest bathroom. We had a lot of bees and hummingbirds as well. There was some weird vine that has a really cool bloom that smells good. Some other rare butterfly species like to eat it. We had several of them. We also have a Blue Bird nest.

This is the entrance to our front door for guest that park in the driveway. Just two of the many flower beds we have. The only food is for the insects and birds.
