What to do with '65 Mustang with 10% leakdown
1965 Mustang coupe, C-code with 289 and a 2bbl carb
Just passed 100k miles. Had a slight stumble at low RPMs. Leakdown came back OK at 8 - 10%. Vacuum advance appears to be working properly. Decided to rebuild the carb just because. Bought the $12 rebuild kit and started the disassembly. In hind sight, should have checked dwell and timing, but too late now. While doing research for the carb rebuild, saw an article on an intake swap and 4 barrel carb install. Worth about 30hp. So... for just a little more money (~$700), instead of rebuilding the 2bbl, I can get a brand new 4bbl and add 30hp. Or... since most of the leakage was through the valves, for a little more money I can go with aluminum heads. And since I am going there, why not cam it too? ![]() Is any of this worthwhile with a 100k engine with 10% leakdown? Thinking of doing the 4bbl now, and save the rest for the engine rebuild?

Rebuild the 2 bbl.
Tune it. Drive it. Enjoy it. If once it drive well and you want to hot rod it, then do it. I had horsepower dreams with my SC at first. Now? I love it as stock. |

to be real.. kudos on the carb rebuild.
i sucked..i dont think i ever got a rochester run right if it went thru one of my rebuilds. i could only do Holleys..which to be honest, i think my mom could do.

I'd do the 4 BBL, when you stomp on it and the secondaries kick in you will smile broadly and bask in the knowledge you made the right decision.

Well, after all the mods, port/polish/cams/Holley/headers/Edelbrock, you will have to turn the motor off when gassing up as the pumps will not be able to keep pace with the motor at idle.
The main reason to just get it running now is because the car won't turn and stop well enough to handle the increase in power with all the mods. A 9 inch rear end with disc brakes from a Lincoln bolts right on, repro style steel wheels look great and can handle decent tires. Set of 4 good shocks with all the above turn the car from a deathtrap into something you can drive without gripping the wheel to the point of cramp. All of the above should run less than $2k. But if you want to wake up a 289 in a straight line a set of headers is the biggest bang for the buck. Cam not so much and too much cam ruins the car completely. Honestly, the best bet is to look at the specs for a Shelby GT 350 and duplicate it, Ol Carroll knew a few things. |

No. The bearings and rings aren't going to get any younger by putting a big carb on a 100k 1950's technology engine. If you want the extra horsepower, start with a complete engine rebuild.

Yea, a nice LS7 is cheap, or spend big bucks and go for a Ford Coyote engine.
![]() Leave it stock, drive it, enjoy it.

coyote or nothing!
![]() My first car was a similar 289/2. It woke up a bunch with a different intake, carb and exhaust. Valve springs were shot so it just got louder past ~3500. 10% leakdown wouldnt concern me one bit. If you just want to tool around, just fix what you have and drive it. The slope is slippery but affordable once you upgrade. Soon you'll NEED a cam, different gears... ![]() |

Yes, just rebuild the 2 barrel and add headers/glass packs. It will be simple and sound good.

The biggest issues with more power, well yer gonna need more brakes. And a drive train upgrade. With lots more power a limited slip rear end. Maybe a different rear end ratio, and of course bigger wheels and tires, and then some nice tubs or flairs. And some spoilers, and might as well paint it. And then......

10% is no biggie. Drive it.
I would keep it mostly period correct. Rebuild the 2 barrel or add Edlebrock, Holly, and a set of tri y headers to get 240 to 250 hp. Cragers or styled steel wheels and you are up town. I wouldn't mess with the aluminum heads. I have had a k code fastback in the past. Poppy red. It was a ton of fun. |
