Was talking to a car guy co-worker tonite. He’s gone as far as he wants to go with rebuilding his 54 Chevy pick up. We both love old cars but after consuming almost all of his good will, his pickup is going to be for sale soon.

Of many things that stood out working with her on that old VW was the speedo cable attached to the front bearing cap and the bearing 'nuts' had an allen pinch bolt. Possibly one was reverse threads?

All of the engineering seemed very odd to a kid used to working on tractors and muscle cars helping my brother work on .

I had no car maintenance experience when I started, nor did I have any friends that were mechanics or mechanically inclined. I learned because I had to. I could not afford to take my vehicle in to a shop. So, I had no choice but to teach myself how to fix them myself.

Sugarwood...stop feeling sorry for yourself. My father didn't even have a car or a license and could not replace the battery in clock, much less a car...yet I was able to start fixing my own cars at 18 because I had no other alternative and there were books in the library. I also learned bodywork (to some extent) because the instructions were on the can of bondo at Kmart. There was no internet or videos to baby folks through repairs like now or parts stores and online catalogs for do it yourselfers to browse. One just had to figure it out (or ask someone for help).

This thread is sorta sad .... I feel sorry for Sugar . At 40, I did not have a single tool, nor any mentors (certainly not dad ) and decided to mebbe buy a 928 .... which led me to Rennlist, and then Pelican .... I read & learned there "could" be a 911 in my garage with Wayne's books, these tech forums, and countless folks willing to show me how.... so I did it .

I'm still not a "car guy" like most/many here fwiw...

You just gotta be able to see and not be a Sugarplum ...
