My Wolf Range Hood is Way Too Loud

Way way too loud, even on low speed.

Has anyone added a VFD, or swapped out motors? It works great, I could live with a lower speed that moved less air and made a lot less noise...

Any of you rich guys have the same problem?

Far from rich but had an AirBnB last December with one and it was way too loud. If I were to spend that kind of money on a kitchen I would look for a way to use a remote fan.

I just built a commercial kitchen with a 3000 cfm hood and it was no where near as loud as the Wolf.

Just out of curiosity, a lot of these internet range sites mention/ rate CFM exhaust, as well as overall noise levels for each model of fan.

Are there any sites which rate your particular model in terms of noise- i.e.- is this a noisy exhaust fan by nature, vs. a quieter exhaust unit with a potential setup issue?

Some of the exhaust fans I looked at were dogs right out of the box in terms of noise levels. Some of these sites had user/buyer feedback regarding this issue. There seemed to be huge variability between not only brands, but between models within a brand.

I can check the specs, but the noise appears to be entirely air moving over the grills and through the fan.

No motor noise, no rattles, no vibration,

Was this a remodel? using old ductwork? Typical ducts are 6", commercial (wolf) may require 8 or 10"

There are variable speed remote controllers for hoods. It's a simple motor, I suspect a ceiling fan controller would work also.

I built my own hood with an 8" duct straight up through the roof. I installed a powerful in line 8" fan, but way up in the attic. I used an infinite control switch. So much quieter with the fan distanced from the hood. I mounted the cleanable filters in the hood right above the stove.

I don't have a Wolf hood (but I do have a 1976 Wolf 3 foot range); the hood is by Vent-a-Hood. I did not buy the internal mount blowers but instead mounted a single fan in the cabinet above near the ceiling. It's still noisy at full throttle but not so much that you can't comfortably talk while at the range.

Get a muffler (Fantech makes a great one. They call it a silencer), goes above the unit up in the attic. It reduces 50-60% of noise. What you are hearing is the velocity of the air moving through the unit and I bet the ducts aren't insulated. Wrap insulation around the rigid pipes may help. For further noise reduction, mount an exterior motor that pulls air through the unit and remove the motor under the hood. I first learned about their mufflers at a builder show about 15 years ago. Now I install one on almost all the kitchens we built. I know which hoods make the most noise and few are very quiet like a Vent-A-Hood.

Does anyone make a Vent-a-Hood type remote roof blower -- but one the fits on a vertical exterior wall as opposed to the roof models ?
Current kitchen vent exits onto a two-story exterior wall.

This. I learned about these when I installed my own hood in 2010 using a remote mounted fantec and an empty viking shell. The mufflers are amazing.

Wolf hood here. Not too noisy though as we have the remote motor mounted on the roof about 9 ft of ductwork away. Very powerful pull and only a sight noise of air moving, but definitely pulls the grease and fumes up into the traps. Get the motor away form the hood.

This is the answer^^. We have a Wolf range (same model as Zeke probably) with a Viking hood that is much like the Wolf hood. Yes, the fans (there are two which can be turned on separately) are very noisy. The real solution is to have the fan moved to the exhaust end of the ducting, again, the further away the better.

Wolf hood there. The fan is an external unit. If you have it on high, its pretty loud, but its also a massive fan pulling air. If you open a window on our 3rd floor, it will clear the whole house is short order!

The modernaire hood that we installed is also loud. It's not the fans, just the volume of air moving through the baffles.

The blower fits the duct. You can turn the duct any way you need. Just elbow it out. Try to do it gently with 45º's.

I have a Zephyr insert that was done during the remodel. The ducting is insulated and 8 inch and goes out into the garage where we had to box it in, etc per code. It also came with a make-up air kit that opens fresh air ducting in the basement. On the highest speed its a bit noisy but not terrible.

It has a remote though for some odd reason.
