Working with reading glasses, how do you guys rock em?

I keep a pair hanging from my truck rear view mirror and use them when necessary away from the house. Mostly when working but also when I go into a store somewhere.

I got like 40 pairs all over the place, and I usually need em in low light conditions or fiddly work.

The ones I use in the garage have pit marks from grime in 'em LOL.

I keep quite a few pair scattered around the house. I have very good natural near sight vision but as soon as I put on my contact lenses, which I need for far vision, then I need the readers.

Most of the time I just get a 3 pack of the cheapies from Walmart.

One thing to keep in mind is your optometrist can tell you what strength you need. For me it was 2.0.

About 2011, I was trying to read the fine print on an iPhone and could not do it. I was also suffering from headaches. Yep, eye strain.

I found that I have two types. For real reading and close in work roughly under 18", I use 1.5. For using my computer I used 1.0.

The 1.5 are smaller, but I buy higher end ($10) ones with a anti-blue coating for the computer. For the 1.0, I buy large diameter glasses which cover my full vision. And again, I go with the better ones with the anti-blue coating.

I also have sunglasses with 1.5 and I use safety glasses with 1.5 built in.

Ill have to check out some of those safety glasses. They will look way more appropriate on me at work, will probably be a lot less fragile, and I can drop the double glass routine.

Yes and no. It depends upon what use you want/need them for. I got a pair of readers from the optometrist, and they were good, but felt like too much. I went back and told her and explained to her that most of what I was reading was not 12"-18" from my face like reading a book but was at least arms distance, or maybe a little more because it was computer monitors on a desk (I was curious, so just measured, probably 2-3 feet). She changed to a different prescription that I'm much happier with and provides me with a little more range while maybe not being quite strong enough for very tiny print or super fine detailed work (for that I use the old glasses or stack both pairs).

I wear safety glasses at work and in the garage with readers. I don’t even notice I have them on and my eyes are better protected.

A long time ago, my very first job out of college was in an engineering department. There were 5 of us. Three of us were under the age of 25, there was a guy in his 30s and an older guy who was 55. The older guy was short and wore bifocals.

Our boss would post memos on a bulliten board. One of us would move the memo up so that the older guy would need to bend his head upward so that he could read it with the bottom half of his glasses. He looked awkward and the 4 of us would laugh at him - and we did this all of the time.

Flash forward and now I'm wearing bifocals - I find myself doing the exact same thing doing up close work. It is frustraing to bend my head trying to read. I'm reminded of my early days. It's not funny anymore.

I have remedied that by having a second pair of glasses - for computer and close work. I now have 2 pairs: one for normal use and one for close work.

You can also buy the 'add-on' reader function from Lee Valley. Just stick them on your regular safety glasses...

I've got one or two grades of readers. One pair with slightly glazed lenses is in the workshop/man cave. I put them on for a job but look over the top of them unless I'm looking at something close up.

When using the angle grinder, or something where a bit of metal may be going at high speed I just use safety glasses and I can see OK enough to do most things like that.

Had them for at least 10 years now. I dislike the tether. A shirt with a pocket is a good choice. I keep a pair at work and 3 around the hosue.
