Its funny, I am actually not a huge motorcycle person. I have been riding them for 30 years, but its always been a side hobby. Cars are my thing.

There is a reason I own a 1992 SS.

When I was in my late 20s, I had ridden a number of bikes, all Japanese. I knew nothing about Ducati. Zero. I don't recall how I found out about them, but I recall standing on the street in front of our apartment in Brookline, MA one day, and a guy came charging up the hill on a 900SS. The sound...sweet Lord. Game over. I HAD to have one.

In roughly 2004, I picked up a 1998 SS FE. It had been sitting for 2 years in some guys garden shed, and ran like crap. I took it down to Ducati Seattle (Owned at that time by a great guy, Dave Roosevelt, today he owns Seattle Used Bikes) for the full monty tune (belts, valves, etc...).

I recall picking it up, and heading up Westlake Ave in Seattle. I let the bike get warmed up, before giving it the beans in a more industrial area of Fremont. It was everything I expected, and so much more. Not the fastest bike I had ever ridden. But the WAY the engine makes power, the sound....heaven. Very fast Japanese bikes just seemed like mundane, polite servants. This bike was ANGRY. It had attitude. The torque....instead of a linear application of power, it felt like a hand grenade going off under the seat.

Sorry to wax poetic, but I could go by 10 Hayabusas if I wanted. I don't. These bike are greater than the numbers. As far as I am concerned, they are art on wheels.

The 900SS continues to scratch the itch for many of us for different reasons. For me, it has the perfect balance of roughness, vibration, sound and simplicity along with insanely fine tuned handling and braking in a package that remains beautiful to the eye as garage art.

The look of that engine (part of the reason I favor the less desirable CR version), the way it feels as you wind through the gears, the effortless shifting and the unique nature of its power and torque curve just strikes the perfect chord. It’s easy to work on and draws me to go to the trouble of only feeding it non-ethanol fuel.

I’ve owned and ridden other Ducs and BMW’s over the years. Far faster, more refined. But none that have offered the feel and balance of the 900SS. It’s a bike with soul that takes time to appreciate to its fullest.

A thing of beauty.

You’re not the only one!

Figured I would update this thread....

Cleaned and ready by a fellow Pelican member Prior to him riding it to my house.

After looking it over (I was not worried about the condition after talking to him) we got a deal struck and I promised he would get the first chance to buy it back. Here it is temporarily as I had to organize the garage for its new parking space. Ignore the messy tool boxes as going through them is a quarantine project.

As usual was good to see him and I appreciated him spending the time to show me around the bike. While I have it insured, the DMV is closed so no plates for it yet. Once I get them I will post my riding impressions....

Thank you for everyone’s comments.

Nice. Do give an update after riding for a couple of days.

The one that was for sale near me has sold, I was considering it but not really sure what to pick up next is part of the problem, lots of options out there but the 900ss looks like a good fit.

It's a pity Ducati didn't adopt the same ride position of the 900ss to the later SS1000DS as it would have been the perfect motorcycle. The twin spark injected motor, the much better suspension and the comfy seat made it a wonderful bike, ruined only by the clip-ons being too low to be comfortable in normal riding.

Consequently I sold my SS1000DS and kept my SS900FE and was happy to put up with its cold start crankiness for the sake of a better riding position.
