2019
killed 41 of 78 people on board
It was struck by lightning and returned to the airport for an emergency landing with full fuel tanks.

Ouch ... You wonder how many more would have survived if the peckerheads would have left their bags behind!?

Situations like these are why I tell my family that travel is NOT done in flip flops or high heels. You have to be able to be quick on your feet to get yourself out of an emergency.

Only mildly related, but once I saw a guy in flip flops running down the center divide of I5 after his small dog that had jumped out of the car after a fender bender level accident. He was just about as fast as the dog flip flopping after it. Any pair of real shoes and he would have caught it just fine ... I use that visual to date to encourage real shoes to be worn during road travel as well ...

Woah!

I do a ton of flying for work and have my carry on bag setup so I can grab my keys in an instant. As long as I have my wallet, phone and keys I can get home and into my house. The reset of the stuff in my carry on can be replaced.

Plane was too high and too hot attempting to land manually after autopilot failure from the lightning strike. Should have gone around but attempted to stuff it on the runway, porpoised, and collapsed the gear.

That's just nuts! I hope the idiots with carry on cases and suit bags will be thinking about their actions for a long time.

I used Google to translate.

The Main Directorate for the Investigation of Particularly Important Cases of the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation completed an investigation into the criminal case against the commander of the RRJ-95B aircraft, Denis Evdokimov. He is accused of committing a crime under Part 3 of Art. 263 of the Criminal Code (violation of traffic safety rules and the operation of air transport, which, through negligence, caused serious harm to human health, the death of two or more persons, major damage).
According to the investigation, the commander of the aircraft following the Moscow-Murmansk message, on May 5, 2019, after returning to the departure airport, made a rough landing on the runway of Sheremetyevo Airport. Evdokimov’s further actions to control the aircraft, committed in violation of the established rules, resulted in the destruction and fire of the aircraft, resulting in the death of 40 passengers and one crew member. In addition, 10 people received injuries of varying severity. In total, at the time of the fire, 78 people were on board, including three minors and 5 crew members.
In the framework of the criminal case, fire-technical, flight, aviation-technical and other forensic examinations were carried out, which, together with other evidence, restored the circumstances of the incident. During the investigation, the actions of the dispatching service and the search and rescue support service for flights at Sheremetyevo Airport were also checked. In this situation, they could not influence the tragedy.
Investigators and experts studied the data of the flight recorders of the crashed aircraft, according to which during the flight the aircraft adequately responded to the pilot's control actions. This information refutes the accused’s version of a possible aircraft malfunction.
The investigation collected sufficient evidence, in connection with which the criminal case was sent to the Prosecutor General of the Russian Federation to resolve the issue of approval of the indictment.

Everyone leaving with a carry on should face criminal charges.

This is why I can't understand the FAA not setting minimum seat pitch. I doubt plane evacuation testing times were done with the current narrow pitch seat spacing.

Any interior set up on a transport category aircraft has to be supported by engineering which includes consideration of ingress/egress requirements. Airlines can't lessen seat pitch without engineering support, so it is accounted for.

As a former pilot who still moves the sticks a little bit with my neighbor who has a Cub and his own run way, I get the part about the drive to the airport being more dangerous, statistically, than any commercial flight.

I know the numbers.

What and who I hate are my fellow passengers I am stuck with for the duration in a sliver of aluminum that flies because of fire and exhaust, with bad air and food.

They, my fellow travelers, are bloated, oafish and selfish, given to dressing and acting poorly, ill equipped for the slightest of emergencies. The video is simply proof of that.

If I never fly again on a commercial airliner I will rejoice.

I have been everywhere I want to go, btw, twice; so spare me any advice that the planet somehow has a Roadside Attraction I need to witness. It doesn't.

Best.

Best.

It looked to me that the unboarding went as well as could be.
Fast and orderly.

Better than this Backfire crash...

Apologies, I don't know how to embed the video here.

But I'm with Seahawk. I recall traveling by air as a child visiting my father in the summers and it was such a different experience. Most vivid were how attractive the flight attendants were. That's certainly no longer the case.

That's what I see as well. Everyone needs to remember that we are witnessing untrained personnel, in the form of airline passengers, participating in what was, for them, and unrehearsed drill. I think they did pretty damn well.

I had the pleasure of participating in several evacuation drills over the years on three different models of aircraft. We did these as a part of the certification process for new models or model variations. It was an awful lot of fun, but we were not under the pressure of a raging fire or anything.

It was always amazing how difficult it was to pull this off in anything resembling an "orderly" fashion, even with folks who knew it was coming, and were in no panic. We did no better than the passengers in this video.
