It has changed our view of almost every aspect of the universe. It has increased human knowledge immensely. And it takes some pretty cool pictures.
 I have a large 30x40 version of the deep field image in my garage.

It is a shame we can't go grab the Hubble and put it in the Smithsonian for history.
And the JWST will advance astronomy a lot. Gonna be astonishing.

OK, the universe is expanding. The biggest scientific breakthrough thus far has had ZERO affect on my life and the lives of the other billions on Mother Earth.
Don't get me wrong. It's interesting and all but where's the relevance? Why are we looking farther and farther outward especially when it raises more questions than answers? It's like thinking humanity's only chance is to colonize some inhospitable space object someplace. Do those people actually think it makes sense to go where the environment already is what they think Mother Earth will become? Apparently they've recently discovered an Earth-like exo-planet that could sustain life as we know it. Problem: it's so far away it would take multiples of our known history to get there. |

Let me take a shot at it. How can somebody not see the value of expanding our knowledge of the universe. Or any knowledge for that matter. It's fundementally human nature to explore, expand and seek out new life, new worlds and go where no man has gone before. How can somebody not understand the enormous benefits gleaned from our thirst for knowledge. Microprocessors, telemetry, rockets. Science! Let's do it again! If it were up to Luddites like you, we'd still be watching TV in the dark! Phhht. The cost of our space exploration is minuscule, relatively speaking. And look at all the jobs created by NASA scientists and specialty instrument manufacturers alone! And medicine. Oh the wonderful things we've learned about the human body, about survival and taking a dump in zero gravity! And all that is material. Think of the non-material, the dreams our astronauts of the future have that are sparked by the wonders of space! The mind expanding notions of dark matter, space-time, blackholes and strings. Relativity! Mankind. Oops. Humankind is nothing without the very thing that makes us human-our minds and our hunger to understand and comprehend the vastness of our universe.
