work that has "value".
i am on loan to another department within my organization. i didnt give up any of my original duties, so i am essentially doing TWO jobs. on five projects. nobody else has more than TWO projects, and they only work within their original scope.
i am totally over it. why? that loan department has a new boss. the new boss is a.. (i should cut/paste his email, but i wont). his emails are written by someone without the command of the written language. i ALWAYS need to ask for clarification. i do realize i suck at typing on this forum, but for work i pre-type everything important in WORD and paste it into emails. he assigns work with ZERO value. generate huge reports and they never see the light of day. i could type a spaghetti recipe in one and he would never find it. i am done. i am pulling back to my regular job assignment. i am wasting energy just poking holes in his stuff. i realize i am doing it but i just cant help myself.

Been in that exact position. Your approach is correct.

I was always very specific about what I was asked to do. Very keen to do it. help etc, but specific. then when it was completed I'd get a sign off of some form. So when the complaint came though I could say I did this and I did that, and here is the signature of the job being completed. If they have changed the scope of the job, or changed their mind - that's their problem not mine - I did what was asked of me. It made me unpopular at times for not being prepared to be their whipping boy, but I maintained my professionalism, and if they couldn't do their job that was their problem.

Didn't they load you up with a bunch of extra work at the other office too? Here's what my father told me. When they know you can do the job and come through each and every time, they will keep that demand up only because they know you will turn yourself inside out to complete it. Don't burn yourself out because of those blood suckers.

Maybe just initiate a conversation with the boss.

Where I work, about 8 years a go a person left. They temporarily gave me their work until they could replace them. Two months later, another left and I was the only one with the background to do their work as well...so I filled in. When, after months later, they hired two people (neither qualified to do either job), they left the duties with me and found new things for them to do that they could handle. Meanwhile, the responsibilities have increased for each over the next 7 years (and in fact, the original job they hired me to do has taken off and doubled in work). Last year, my immediate supervisor retired and another employee left. They gave me the supervisor's job but no increase in pay...telling me they would give two new employees. I have managed to triage and do all of this for now (improving greatly on what my supervisor had achieved with the group with many more people). Now they tell me the budget is busted and they cannot replace any of them. Just wait till I retire in Dec...They don't believe I really am going to.

If I insisted on doing work that has “value”, I’d have had to quit years ago.
I look forward to that day.

That was the end of it for me. I told the owner I was done fixing the equipment and plumbing as I had too much to do in the computer department. He would actually hire contractor plumbers of electricians at full price to do what I used to do for free. I still had to teach each new employee how to do their job.
