Fried egg headlights have totally grown on me .

Cannot believe I am saying this out loud. I have 2 997's , and two 986 boxsters sitting here. Im standing back looking at them, and I think I may prefer the look of the once hideous older cars better.
Flame away, I can take it ....

I have no problem with the fried egg lights. Some folks seem to criticize cars for various reasons. Porsche has always been good at styling their cars. That is one reason they sell well.

I'm right there with you, I think they were only "ugly" because they were a change for the norm, but now years down the road some folks are coming around to them.

I love the look of the "ambers" on my 996. Don't like 'em? Don't buy one.

My newest Porsche is an '83 SC.

Are you saying they changed the headlights?

I always thought the 996 was a good starting point for the watercooled 911's, even when it was new.

I think the 996 will do okay over time esthetically, much like the 1965 911 when it replaced the 365. It will go through a period of disfavor , just like the SWB long hood 911's in the 80's when everyone wanted a turbo flared 930, but after a lonnnnggg time, the narrow hips and headlights will come back into favor and people will grow to really appreciate the simple beauty of the beginning of the car, much like the longhoods early look has fallen back into favor over time.

The 1960's 911's were 20+ years old in the 80's when they weren't as highly desired. The 996's are now at the same age. They might subjectively be at the bottom of the fashion curve now, but will only get better.

Then some young Magnus Walker will come along, who will collect and customize them, and then everyone will start to take a second look at them bla bla bla.....

My 02 Boxster S I removed the corner amber lens and replaced with the smoked so the OEM amber is just on the inside portion . I like the way it looks . With the outer amber corner lens in place it was too much amber color for me . To each his own .

Fungus can grow on a person too.
I personally don't care for them but to each his own. They would have been better received if they were on the Boxster OR 996. Having them on both screamed "we went cheap". I know that I will get flamed for this but frankly I didn't like the slab sided 996 body style at all. That said, I know they are a great deal for someone wanting a sports car.

And who doesn't love them? (left purposefully ambiguous)

Porsche made the mistake of putting them on the Boxster first.

If they'd come out on the 996first, then the lower priced Boxster things might have been different.

Nonetheless, these headlights won a design award.

BMW has been talking about laser headlights recently. Maybe they will intro a Shark with them...

Deck furniture wins design awards too but I don't want it in my sports car...
The air cooled purists/snobs (disclosure: I am one) were already having fits over the water cooled thing and the slab sided car (accused of looking like a Ford Probe). The headlights became associated with everything many old timers didn't like about the new car. To each his own.

The only reason people freaked out about the headlights was the relative lack of change over the previous 35 years. Also because Porsche purists freak about about any possible change. I’ve always liked both how the 996 looked and drive, they are refined but still raw while also having a simple, low and lean look. I think they have aged quite well. When you consider the value proposition they can’t be beat, which is why comparing them to anything air cooled is stupid.

I don't really have a problem with the headlights; my complaint is that the 996 lost its curves, and became slab-sided. The Turbo retained them and is a favorite of mine.
