I like old school. Once things get back to normal, I want to build a 308.
With Red anodized parts.

I own the following

Marlin Camp Carbine 45acp. It's a fun plinker that uses 1911 magazines. Lot's of fun under 70yards. Simple blowback design that gets really dirty in 200 rounds. Hard to clean and known for cracking stocks and mine has.
40 cents around
M1 Carbine, 30 carbine. It's a better rifle than the Marlin. 30carbine is just a bit stronger than .357 Magnum. Great collections item. Holds it's value and fun to shoot. Pie plate accuracy out to 200 yards. Minute of man at 300 yards. It's semi reliable. If it runs a whole mag it's a good run. I've replaced the springs. I've recently cleaned some gunk out of the extractor. I hope it will work next outing.
40 cents around
Ar15. 5.56. Easiest of the bunch to control, hits chest size targets with iron sites out to 400 yards. Well designed, easy to clean, easy to shoot. Modifications are easy, ammo falls off of trees and not to pricy.
30 cents around
Springfield M1A Loaded, SS barrel, Walnut stock 7.62x51 (.308) great rifle, hits chest size targets to 500 yards, 700 yards when I have a $1,200 hard to mount scope on it. Not as scary looking as an AR15. Has greater power at 400yards than the AR does at the muzzle. Odd cleaning regime. Don't take the action out of the wood to not lose zero, don't mess with the scope mount it will lose zero. Cost 3x what it cost to shoot an AR15.
80 cents around
M1 Garands. 30/06. Has the same power as the 7.62x51 but longer case. World class rifle.... For 90 years ago. Has a sweet trigger, most have been broken in by killing Nazi's, Japanese, and Commies in Korea. They point fantastically, goes BANG, BANG, BANG,BANG,BANG,BANG,BANG,BANG, ..PING!. 8 rounds in a embloc clip. Great collectors piece. You can order them via the CMP and get them delivered to your door. Ammo isn't cheap, you really should run surplus to prevent 70 year old parts from damage. If your range won't let you fire magnet attracting ammo you can't use surplus. Front sight blade is as thick as a brick and obscures chest size targets at 300 yards. Just block out the target, make sure the blade is center and send it. You will hit it. It's fun to hit knock down resetting targets if someone else is hitting the same target with his AR you can wait for him to hit it and once the target swings back as far as the 5.56 round will move it about 4" you can hit it with the 30/06 and the target will arc back 12" and stay down for a bit. 8.6# of steel, walnut and American History.
80 cents to $1.25 a round
Anyone in Southern California wanting to go out for a range day, let me know. I will bring all, if you want to shoot the later two I will take donations on the $.80 a round ammo

In depth analysis here. You can skip through the chronograph and shooting to get to chrono and target results. Paul Harrell has very unbiased videos. I mean he is biased and has some dry humor added but he lets the tests do the talking and "you be the judge".

My experience with Mini-14s is that the later models are quite accurate. They did not just up their quality they also increased the barrel diameter sightly. No expert but in about 2008 this change happened. You should shoot both. They are both not expensive, so you can always buy both.
