Go to the mattresses
I am king of my house. So I get one third of the bed. That I have to share with both dogs and one of the cats. My wife gets the middle. The other third goes to my wife’s cat that hisses and claws at anything that gets within two feet of her.
We are upgrading to a king. Have the frame. Who here knows mattresses? Too many options. And ridiculous prices from shady looking businesses. Educate me.

I'm in on this one as well. Mattresses.........the only business that is shadier than the car business...if that's even possible. I thing I do know is manufacturers take the same mattress and give it different names and slightly different styling to resellers. Making it almost impossible to do a cost / benefit analysis.

my guest bed came out of a box. a relatively small box.
my wife ordered it from costco. it was the coolest unpackaging i have ever done in my life. the mattress looked like a big burrito that was covered in shrink wrap. i was an idiot and opened it in my living room. it expanded fast and huge. then i had to drag it into the bedroom. i hate to admit it, but it is super comfortable. just perfectly firm, with just that perfect "give" at the upper layers of the mattress. our house guest love it. it was less than $400 for a queen, mattress only. it lays on that super thin boxspring replacement. i dont know what that part is called. i was told CASPER makes a great version but it is more expensive.

I was using an old 14" memory foam which stunk and was seriously wrecking my back. Too hot. Too much slouch.
Even got stuck and trapped one morning when I woke up tweaked. Replaced it with a $250 queen-sized spring from Ikea. I did not want to pay $1,000+. It was sold rolled up in a box to fit in a car and had to be unused the first three days. Not the greatest but not bad. They also sell dual-sided foam toppers for winter-summer. And meatballs.

check out the hybrids - a combination of coils and memory foam. I sleep on a Serta, and highly recommend them.

I think everyone's so different, it's hard to make a mattress recommendation. But FWIW my wife and I both love the mattress she bought from Costco. And if you don't love it, the return policy is pretty forgiving.

We got a Nectar king 6 months ago. We are very happy with it. 1 year return policy. Before we ordered it went to a couple of mattress stores. Like others have said they are as bad as used car dealerships.

long time Tempur pedic here, but now it is in the guest room. stupid money but for where I spend almost 1/3 of my life, it seemed a great investment. we recently moved up to a california king and skimped with a Sealy version of the tempur. occasionally still sneak into the guest room for a nap on the "good" mattress.

Took advantage of the 100 night free trial of the Tuft & Needle mattress after reading about it here and looking at their blurb on the web site.
Love it. One night was all it took - no question of sending it back. Firm, supportive, comfortable. Warm in the winter, cool in the summer. And cheaper than mattresses that make my back hurt.

My mattress is reasonably firm, but the base is near solid flat. No inner sprung base for me. I need the bed flat and firm or I get a sore back/neck.

Most larger metropolitan areas have a factory-to-you mattress company. Some, of course, are a sham but there are some that can make you a bespoke mattress for a decent price if you know what you're looking for.
For example, a Sleep Number mattress is an air bag. Pretty much what a waterbed used to be but all dolled up with layers of profit on top. There is a company in Orange Co, CA that will make you an air bag for the cost of an air bag. They can even wrap it up in some mattress covering so you can add your custom layers which they have. Each SN mattress has a model number separated by about a grand each step up. One step is about a 12/" of cotton. Yeah, that's worth another grand. |

I will second this , we have a queen OMF that is reversible . The facility will be a store front with manufacturing in the back . Yep they make them right there . They can customize and are reasonably priced .

I’m hearing that I could get a Casper or a Costco new every ten years for the rest of my life for less than the price of some of the specials at my local mattress ranch.
Now to convince my wife of this.

If you don’t need any bounce, then foam is fine

You are either a memory foam or coil spring person. My gf like memory foam, I like coils. The memory foam is very dense and you kind of become one with the mattress. For me, getting out of the mattress is a PITA because there is no bounce to get you out, like a coil spring mattress. On the memory foam, I have to wiggle to get out.
Oh yeah, I prefer coil springs because it gives that bounce back when doing the nasty. Memory foam makes you work more because there is no bounce.

Exactly
Plus, when you sit on the edge of foam, it has little support I asked a bed inspector who came out years ago for a warranty claim what mattress he would buy, and he told me that the thing to look for is weight.. Try lifting it at the corners. A good mattress will be heavy, because they use heavier springs, and lots of them The one that failed was a name brand something or other, that you could lift easily with one hand |

I buy traditional mattresses. The first thing I do is buy a decent mattress cover. The only thing I wish I had gotten was a two sided mattress so it can be flipped over.
