My Father was in CBI (China, Burma and India) theater during WWII. He said that since snakes could not back out of a hole, there would be an entrance and an exit hole. The locals would find the entrance snake hole and reach in, grab the snake's tail and pull. After a short distance, the snake would tense up it's muscles making it impossible to pull it any further out. One of the natives would take his Kukra knife and make a small cut on the snake's back causing the muscles to relax. When that happened they would pull some more until the muscles tensed. Eventually they would have the entire snake out of the hole and being held by a dozen or so men. Some of these snakes were 25 feet long (or more) and quite fat thru the middle. The snakes were able to kill and eat a human and did so occasionally. Somewhere around here I have a picture of a dozen or so locals carrying a snake with about 3 feet of snake between each two men! That bad boy had to have been close to 35 feet long! Not only did they get rid of a predator, they also had enough meat to feed the entire village!

A hearty dog could certainly do this job and would be a little more disposable than your buddy.

I like snake - I have only had rattlesnake - so I can imagine a big chunky snake like that is a treat. I'd love to go hunt them in the everglades. Maybe one of you is a snake hunter and can invite Vash and me. Vash could be talked to being our bait, I am sure.

It really comes down to what anyone will do when they are hungry, and their children are hungry.

I am very lucky and live in a first world country and yea, I have been pretty hungry in the past but I have never gone days with no food. One of my friends is a former Army Ranger. He will not eat any chicken or turkey. He said he had to eat birds raw when in survival training. He could not have a fire as that would give away their location. All food was eaten raw. Bug, mammals, reptiles or birds. Anything that moves is potential food when you are a week with no food.

No, I was not suggesting using a dog as live bait. What I meant with "hardy" is an aggressive catch dog that is motivated to go in the hole and bite the snake in the face. Think terrier etc. Of course the snake may perceive that as a threat and just go back in the hole further?

Speaking of bait, I do wonder if a dead animal could be used to lure the snake instead? You can tell, I am intrigued. May have to go on snake safari to Africa soon!

Just go to Florida. They have a total overabundance of invasive snakes that truly need killing. Lots safer and cheaper than Africa. Same heat, and they have both Anacondas and Pythons and even a super mean hybrid that is really aggressive and strong. You will be hailed as a hero if you get some of them.

vipers, pythons and boas have snout mounted pit organs that sense heat. The organ allows them to hunt for mammals in the dark. IIRC, they go after living stuff if given an option.
